Getting Noticed...Or Not
Do you feel a sense of disappointment when people do not notice your watch?
I got the idea for this thread when I was talking with my brother about his watch. I asked him if anyone has commented when he has been wearing his Day Date II. He said that only one person, so far, has said something to him. It brought to mind that over the years only a few times have people commented about my watches. Remarkably, each time I was not wearing an expensive watch. One time, I was on an airplane and I was wearing a watch I bought from the Stauer catalog. It was a Sturhling (spelling?) rose gold. The other time was just recently when I was wearing my father's vintage Voumard watch. I don't own watches for the purpose of getting noticed, but to be honest I do like the idea of the watch getting noticed by others. So this brings up the question Do you feel disappointed when you think people aren't noticing your expensive timepiece, pen or other such item? Last edited by scarhead; 28 August 2010 at 07:46 AM.. It doesn't bother me. The majority of people just don't care what kind of watch others are wearing and that's fine with me . . .

No I don't feel disappointed I notice watches on people and I never say anything so why should they.
I wore my Explorer I for years no one noticed, I bought my Bremont...nothing. I bought a Sea-Dweller still nothing. Two weeks ago I bought a GMT Pepsi and so far I have had a few people ask me about it. It's the Pepsi bezel it's just so eye catching. It did feel good to have someone say, I like your watch.

I notice watches all the time, but I never say anything. I assume that for every remark I get there must be dozens more that noticed but didnt say anything...

A few people notice because its a Pepsi, and as mentioned, is eye catching because of the bezel. Not many people would know, or are interested in what watch you wear.

All these years of watch wearing, and not a single comment on any of them.
I need to start rolling up my sleeves!

No, not at all. I prefer under the radar. If it makes me feel good when I wear it, that's all that matters.

I more often than not don't even wear a watch but I still have X amount of them.
I guess it's a "boys toys" thing for me more than wearing for show.

I don't "need" validation from others about my choices. That includes my timepieces.
The "is that a solid gold watch?" is a good example of a comment that I don't care for. But I got far more comments from strangers about my Tissot watches than I have with my DD. Maybe people assume it is a fake: don't know & don't really care.

I think a lot of people notice what kind of watches we wear but only a few would make a comment
and that's okay with me. I don't mind getting a remark from a friend though.

Doesn't bother me. If someone notices, that's nice, and I take it as a compliment, but I certainly don't want to flash it around seeking comments.

I would rather people not notice my Rolex watch but on the other hand if the person is a watch lover then I would like to talk to them if they comment.

At work I wear my sleeves down. In my personal life I have the only Rolex of anyone I know and I would prefer if no-one asks about it.

Yesterday, while wandering around Sam's Club jewelry department, I saw an Invicta 8926 w/ Citizen/Miyota 21j movement. I paid $109, with the intent of playing with it, and to see if it got any comments. As with my Sub and GV, no one seems to care what watch I'm wearing. It has a non-hacking movement, but will be fun to add to the rotation...

I get a lot of comments on my watches etc.. The first time it happened I had an older man ask me if my GMT Master II was a fake... *sigh* I was 21. I was at work and I was busy, so I took it off, handed it to him to play with.. and said 'You decide'.. Turns out he sold watches, knew right away when he touched it I guess.. I could hear him spinning the bezel in the background whilst I worked :P
Now a days a lot of the local college kids around my business are getting into fine watches.. mostly they like Movado and don't really know what a Rolex looks like outside of a rap video... 'iced out'.. I've gotten a lot of kids interested in owning a Rolex some day, since I look their age. I tend to be a tad eccentric so people are curious about a lot of things I do it seems these days.. I bought a Movado for a beater watch [Never wear it now...] and I had it on one night around town.. a girl that I met at a party a few weeks prior saw me [she must be 23?].. saw the watch and said 'WOW is that a MOVADO!?.. Those cost like a thousand!!..' and a group of her friends looked it over.. when I met her though I had on a TT Rolex Datejust... not a word. I was sorta pissed in a very strange way hahaha... Hehehe, I just like watches.. but I do feel good when people strike up conversation... even when they tell me 'It's stupid to spend that on a watch!' I just tell them it's all relative... and they tend to agree. Then again, not a single person in my personal circle even knows what a Patek is.. Interesting thread, a little deeper perhaps then some members may read it to be. I grew up poor so I don't really have that 'old money' hide the money and play it humble approach either. I am very proud of what I've done and what's on my wrist is a small reflection of that, like it or not. End Rant hehehe |

Personally I prefer to go by unnoticed, and I prefer to wear an EXP II in the office which is very discreet. I am not comfortable being in a spotlight. I might wear something special in the company of friends who are into the watch thing, and I love to wear them in rotation at home for my and my eyes only...

I do not wear my Rolex for others to see and ask about...I wear my watch for personal pleasure and because I can...I've only had one person ask me about my watch since I have owned it!!!

I also prefer to fly under the radar. I've chosen my watches to impress myself and no one else. If my intent was to have strangers make comments on my watches, I'd save a lot of money and just buy flashy fakes.
