Upgrade to 50 Anniversary GMT?
I went by my AD today to get them to move one link on my SS GMT from the 6 o’clock position to the 12 o’clock position. The clasp still isn’t centered (it is off the other way) put it is much more secure and comfortable this way. (5 at 6:00, 8 at 12:00)
Anyway while I was waiting to for them to move the link I was asking about the TT 50 anniversary GMT. The AD said that he had one but he just didn’t have it in the case, and he got it out for me. Anyway, long-story short is that he would let me upgrade the new GMT that I purchased from him about 2 months ago to the 50 Anniversary GMT for $3,300. Should I do it or continue to look for a nice used SUB or vintage GMT? |

That difference is too much. It's definitely worth upgrading to the new GMT-II, but certainly not at that price. It also depends on how much you paid for the current GMT-II which you say is virtually new. In that case, you'd be better off selling it privately and then going into your AD with full cash for the new GMT-II. Just my 2 cents. Good luck - JJ

That sounds like too good of a deal to pass up.

I don't know if I could get him to come down any from that price or not. As far as what I paid for my GMT II, I don’t think that is part of equation. It is a sunk cost. The question is really its fair market value +$3,300. |

That's why I suggested you sell your GMT separately, get the cash and then go visit your AD. With cash in your hand, you can get a much better deal and you will come off a winner. JJ

In the UK the difference between the GMT SS and new GMT TT is £2300 or $4500, with little discount available on either.
This makes the cost to change of $3300 more attractive. If you've got the budget, do it.

AD around the corner has new GMT in case at SS Sub + $3775. Not sure what the old GMT went for.

Well considering a new GMT goes for $5070 and a new TT 50yr GMT goes for $8925, I would say if $3300 cash plus your old GMT gets you the new GMT then that is a very good deal.
It also really depends if you want the new GMT. Of course for the same $3300 plus a little more you could keep your GMT, and get a Sub, Exp or DJ. Good to have 2 Rolex watches--always have one for backup! Plus nice thing about the old GMT is it's history and tradition. Not much changed in the looks for 50 years! Also sits slimmer on the wrist and it proven. Can swap out bezels as well. The other thing I lie about the old GMT is that the bezel rotates 120 times, compared to the new Bezel that only clicks 24 times. This allows the old GMT to use the Bezel to record precise time elapse like a sub. (use colored parts to mark 30 min increments, or multiply 2.5x Bezel hour to get time in minutes) |

I'm still struggling with my savings for a SUBMARINER!
I don't really need a GMT as I rarely travel futher than my house to the club these days and there aren't any time zones to cross. I swim regularly so I a Triplock crown is very appealing. |

Jim might be right... say he sold his GMT for $4k... I don't know that he'd be able to get the TT GMT for $7.3K necessarily. Giving his dealer the watch plus $3.3K might be the quickest means to the end.
Also, take a look in our for sale section... there are GMT Master IIs there selling for way less than $4k... and they aren't exactly moving. Even at $3.4k they aren't sold that quickly.

I would go for it. The price he is offering you appears to be less the new MSRP difference. Given the fact your SS GMT is 2 months old and is considered used, you are getting amn excellent bargain.

I'd probably have to go with JJ on this one because you can probably get more than 2000$ for your SS. I do think it is a great idea to get a 50th is a great idea though

There is no way I could find one for $5,300 ($2,000+$3,300). If you say my watch is worth $4,000 then this would cost me $7,300 or about 18% off retail. |

Thats an awesome deal. I would do that in a second. Selling a watch privatly can be a pain in the ass. Your only coming out of pocket 3300.00
The watch is 8925.00 new and you wont get a discount on it being its soo new. I would just give me the 3300.00 and be done with it. I dont get why everyone is soo worried over 3,4, or even 500.00 when your spending 9000.00 on a watch. For me , the ease of the sale would outweigh the small diff in savings. |

Maybe people are confusing your situation with you paying $3300 for a new SS GMT? I don't get it. There's no way that trading in your SS GMT and paying $3300 cash to your AD is not a good deal. Is anyone in this forum capable of getting a TT 50th Anniversary GMT for less than $7300 out the door? That's assuming you can sell your 2 monoth old SS GMT for $4K (which is tough to do... people trying to get $4K for a SS GMT are not selling them currently). People with ads for $3.4-3.6K are probably considering lowering their prices...

Yes again, that is a really good deal he is offering you. If you want the New TT GMT, I would go for it. There is no way you would be able to sell your GMT on your own and come out even close. Sounds like you want the TT GMT, it is a good deal your dealer is offering you.

I think that's an excellent deal. Even I could not get the new Anniversary GMT for $7300. At best I'd still pay around $7500 out the door. JJ
