My Grail - modem burner

Well folks I can't seem to capture a good photo of my grail. I am serious thinking of hiring Jocke to photograph it. The watch in person has so much character & flare, but in my photos it is just bland. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Here is an attempt in indirect light.

Here is a shot from my iphone on a whime. Probably the best to date.

Wholly Moley! My modem is on FIRE! And my eyes! Aauughh!

That watch is the equivalent of a huge facial tattoo!

Is it the earlier case, or the new 41mm size? Thanks.

Not for me, I am afraid, but very impressive! And I am glad to see you share your enthusiasm here.

Congrats! A grail is a grail.

Did I say Congrats?

Best (and congrats again!)

Mike,
Use a large, white plastic waste basket laid on it's side. Place your watch inside w/ lots of light outside using the container as a diffuser. Then practice moving the light source and watch around till you have the best angle.
Here's an example:

Those shots of the 16718 are easy. Shooting the Meteorite is challenging. The only President I have had is this watch. Mike

That is a tough one Mike. The brightness of the diamonds can be a problem. The lens and the in Camera processing of point and shoots can make it tough to get a good shot.

You probably need a good Digital SLR with and dedicated APO lens. One of the Canon or Nikon SLRs with their 60mm or 100mm macro lenses. Going to a SLR and Macro lens you will find it will be hard to all of the watch in focus at closer distances because you are shooting with a lens that does not have as much depth of field as a smaller format camera, like a point and shoot.

As for the in camera processing, the Digital SLRs will allow you to shoot in a raw mode that will allow you to hold more highlight detail and adjust a bit in processing on your computer.

Send a PM to Kyle, I think he went to a Canon Slr and Macro lens. His combo is working well.

Keep in mind that the quality of a good digital camera is the ability to capture the dark areas along with even very bright areas in the same shot without under exposing the dark areas or over exposing the light areas. The better cameras when shot in RAW mode have a larger dynamic range which gives better exposure and colour. The even higher end cameras and digital backs used for advertising shots not only have a higher range of exposures (Dynamic range), but also a smoother and more expanded colour range. Most of these cameras cost more than your Rolex
