Blackberry Tablet called Playbook

Specs-7", 1ghz dual core, dual cameras, flash, 1 GB ram, wifi, Bluetooth, hdmi, 1080p video playback. So, I love my iPad very much and the playbook specs get me excited. How about you?

It looks pretty cool, but their OS is a complete unknown to me. I think RIM realized that their phone OS was going to be a liability in the iphone/droid/BB competition.

My only issue with android and maybe the playbook is the ability to sync movies and tv shows like one can with the iPad.

Unknown OS, no software, no internal modem.

And they copied the form factor AND the Apple naming format.
Geez... what happened to originality? Creativity?

Apple makes iPhone, everybody laughs and said it is stupid to have no keypad.
Now everybody makes phones that look and feel like cheper iphones, with no keypad and square icons on the screen.

Apple makes iPad, everybody laughs and said it's stupid. It's a big iPhone.
And you guessed it, now everybody is rushing to make their own version of that.

I'll stick to my iPad.
Apple has built the world's best ecosystem and like Mikey said, it is irrelevant what the other guys can do that the iPad can't. Why? Cause unlike the Apple products which can be used by an ape, nobody knows how to do use the damn things that the other guys make.

We are talking about blackberry, not ipad, but since you brought up Apple, I will jump in feet first. Where's Bruno?

I would disagree on every statement you made, except for the OS, which is a point I brought up already.

Ipad didn't have 3G radio when it was released either.

I'm not sure how one would avoid copying the form factor. I know apple is the most rockin awesome company in the world, but I'm sure they didn't patent the rectangle. Apple doesn't own the traditional notebook computer format either, yet they still sell them. Who did they copy on that one?

I don't see how the naming convention is similar. If you want to argue that point, let's examine the IBM (now Lenovo) ThinkPad, which predated the ipad by over a decade.

My old Treo, and Palm Pilot before that had a touch screen and an icon driven menu before iphone existed.

Touchscreen, tablet PC's existed long before iphone or ipad. I remember they were the must-have executive toy of 2004.

Everyone did not say ipad and iphone were stupid. I pretty much remember lines around the block to buy them. Shoot, even I had a 3G for a week before I returned it out of frustration and lack of productivity.

I agree about the apes being able to use Apple products. I pretty much see that every day.
Now, before all of the apple fanboys get fired up, remember that this is a fun, light-hearted poke at my favorite target. It's too easy to poke fun at L. Ron Hubbard and Tom Cruise, so Apple is the next best thing.

I personally can't wait to see this new tablet.

I've only used the iPad once, and am still debating weather to get one or not. Part of me feels that the tablet itself is just useless for someone that already owns a laptop, PC, AND a smart-phone, who really needs a tablet ?

Well, . . . . I do, just to have one lol

I have been surprised by how taken I am with my MacBookPro (work computer). I honestly may not ever run a Windows machine again if I don't have to.

However, it would be very bad to underestimate RIM and the Blackberry following. There are a significant number of people who still use the platform. It is -the- premiere business-focused ecosystem out there. Period.

If the Playbook delivers - and by that, it will have to convince Blackberry owners that it's part of the Blackberry "family", I think it could do quite well.

We're talking different markets entirely. The Playbook is meant for people who wouldn't dream of having an iPad, and vice versa.

Also, nobody is "rushing" to make their version of the iPad. The week that Apple announced the iPad, there were literally -dozens- of other tablets announced, many of them before the Apple announcement. In fact, these other devices stole a lot of the iPad's thunder. The reason you don't see more competitors is because the other tablets were using more sophisticated technology (Nvidia Tegra 2) than the iPad. This backfired because Nvidia really dropped the ball on Tegra 2. This is holding up the myriad of tablets, the new Playstation Portable (PSP2), and a plethora of convergence products for the home.

Not that it matters, but I'm pretty sure the Apple Newton pre-dates everything that has been mentioned here already. Announced 1992, released 1993.

I have both BB for work and Iphone for leisure.. I have to say when it comes to business iphone is miles behind to BB...

I think the same for ipad vs playbook. Ipad is just the streched version of iphone. playbook is a LOT more than the BB phone..

And you Dan, she is learning to hod carry all over again.

To keep the thread on track while convalescing my iPad has been a God send, she reads books using the book and kindle app and watches BBC iplayer when she cant sleep because she has to sleep on her back with a pillow between her legs for the next six weeks, while doing her exercises on a morn she again uses the BBC iplayer to listen to the radio. Great device. this new RIM tablet will have to be good to compete.
