What is the Significance of the Anchor?

As the title states, what is the deal? Is it just a piece of Rolex swag that came with the Sub? Does it commemorate something? Does it serve a function in any way shap or form (other than being able to anchor a children's toy )?

Pretty much, WHAT GIVES???

It's a tangible 'guarantee' of the watch's depth rating. It states that on the lower bar of the anchor. I'm kinda irked that they don't put them in the package any more.

Well IMHO its just a bit of marketing tat, and serves no real purpose or function, as depth ratings are on the dials.

And here I thought it was to remind everyone that if you don't actually have an anchor the Sub is heavy enough to be used as one...

This can be said about quite a few things besides a Rolex Anchor
