Greetings from Ocala, FL
Hi everyone,
I was pleased to stumble across this site. My wife and I live in Ocala where we are both able to enjoy the true beauty of "old Florida." She is completely enveloped in horses, so naturally this was where we ended up. Ultimately, we may move again, but we won't leave the state (I am 4th Generation, and I think there is some code about me not being able to leave). I got my first Rolex when I was 18. It was a gift from my father, who received his first Rolex from his father when he was 18. I have always loved classic cars/boats/guns/watches, and my Dad got me a 1969 Rolex Submariner 1680 from a collector on Captiva Island, FL. I still wear it everyday; I still fish, dive, and work with it on. I wore it spearfishing in the Keys a couple months ago, to the dismay of some of my friends. Why have a "classic" dive watch if I can't wear it diving, right? I know it sounds corny, but pulling up a fat hogfish offshore of Sugarloaf on the end of a spear with my 40+ year old Rolex on makes me think about all of the awesome stuff this watch has "seen" since new! My old 1680 has held up great, except the time I thought I would clean it in the shower and dropped it (big mistake), but after a lot of headaches a vintage rolex guy in Tampa was able to fix it up like new. Last month I bought my wife her first Rolex. It is an older Ladies Date model, which was cleaned up by a watchmaker in Sarasota. It is the standard two tone with a jubilee band and Roman dial. It looks amazing and the wife loves it. After scoring such a great deal on my wife's new (used) Rolex, I am in the market to get myself another one. I am seriously looking at a newer, no-date 14060M Sub, or possibly an older 5513 Sub. I really want the "James Bond" watch, but I have to find the right deal. I will definitely put the grey/black NATO band on it too. I bought a 1974 Carlson-Glastron Ski Boat like the one from "Live or Let Die" last year, which I have completely restored as a fun project. I really want that James Bond no-date Sub to go with it. I am also thinking about a GMT-II, and forgoing another Sub until later on. My Dad has a 1972 GMT Master, and I have always liked his old "Pepsi" Rolex, so maybe the GMT-II is the right move. I would love a GMT ceramic, but I just can't swing it right now. Anyway, now that I am in the market for another Rolex I figured I would seek out some info. It is really disappointing that there are so many fakes! The insane number of fakes is what prompted me to educate myself a little more. I am very appreciative to have found this site, as there seems to be a well policed trading board, as well as a ton of great info. I'm happy to be here and I hope to learn a great deal from all of the more experienced collectors! -Ed |
