Shall I pull the trigger??

Hi guys,

My local AD offered me a deal on their last piece of Explorer 1 with a price of £2900. The price for the watch has just been increased to £3300. I think it's a good price but not sure if I want to pay the premium for a brand new watch or buy a pre-owned.

I have a 16610lv and I am thinking of buying a 114270 as an everyday watch. What do you guys think?

Well..I would go brand new with the warranty in your name , if you can afford it. Just my opinion.

There was a thread just today I think bemoaning the fact that Explorers aren't that available on the used market.

I personally don't mind the premium for brand new watches, but of course, that limits my buying habits, but I do have peace of mind when I leave the store.

If you can shell out the extra dime to buy a brand new from ad, you can't go wrong with that.

The list price of the Explorer is excessive for its spec. when you compare it to some other models, but that's before you factor in its pedigree. This is the last chance to get one of these classic wristwatches new and, as has been observed elsewhere, used examples are rarely to be seen. I would say, "Go for it." I got mine last week!

They are about £2850 on the grey market for a BNIB example so £2900 from an AD looks like a good price to me. Personally I find the watch slightly on the small side but it is a classic model and as stated in other posts this could be your last chance to buy from an AD. Good luck with your decision.

I've finally pulled the trigger and will be picking it up tomorrow after work. I'll try to post some pictures later assuming I have the adequate admin right to do that

I always wanted a 114270 based on its classy look and excellent build quality. It's low profile presence also makes it a perfect everyday watch. My existing 16610lv is attracting far too much attention at work...

I do think a price tag of £2900 is a bit high especially comparing to the US market price However, the low supply in pre-owned ones and also the fact that the model is being discontinued make me almost impossible not to go for it. Also, the one I am getting has the random serial number, I believe it's the final batch production of the 114270?

Anyway, it's gonna be a long night and a long day tomorrow...

Yes I agree with others there aren't many pre-owned EX I around. I remember my father, who has owned a few Rolexes and others watches one time or another, advised me to get an EX I if I wanted only one Rolex as it is (in his opinion) highly collectable due to its heritage and pedigree. I eventually chose the DJ as the EX I is too big and manly (IMO) for my girly wrist.

I also think £2900 is a reasonable price for a brand new watch from an AD, esp. with the continuous price hike. You probably can safely assume that should you want to sell it in the future you are likely to get most money back.

Picked up on Friday after work... The watch was still in its postal packaging sent from my AD's head office. I guess they just couldn't be bothered with all the unwrapping and price tagging since they are not getting any more of this
