help me out here

I have a 1655 that was in real bad shape and sent it back to Rolex in New York, they did the service on it but the band needed to be replaced as it had a crack in one of the links about half way up on it and I had the dial replaced as well as the hands since there was some water damage and they just looked horible. So my question is people say I ruined the collector value of the watch by replacing the dial and hands, is this really tru since all the work was done by Rolex themselves and I have the paperwork showing they replaced the parts? just wondering, I love the watch and I enjoy wearing it. The other part of this is has anybody had any experience with an appraisal under similar circumstances and what should I expect, since I need to update my homeowners ins. Thanks for your help, I think I have learned more in the time I have been on this forum than n the previous years without it.

In a way yes you might've affected the collectibility of the item, but I personally wouldn't worry about it too much if that watch is your daily wear. I mean one cannot use a watch that is not comfortable..

If you aren't planning on reselling it, just wear it and enjoy it. But if you do decide to sell it, the price will probably have to go down a bit.

I dont wear it every day, I rotate it with my sub and another watch, and I am not planning on selling it, but what do you think it would be worth. I know it sounds weird but I see them going from 10K and up so it is kind of hard to gauge. and I know the more info I have when it is appraised the better off I will feel.

I would guess the value it dropped is somewhere in the vicinity of how much a tritium dial and hands would cost.

I wouldn't worry about the value angle aside from the insurance rider adjustment. It's a grail reference for me, and meant to be enjoyed - with whatever dial you have on it.

I'm going to say that you likely did the right thing..

It is true that an original Explorer II, in excellent condition can bring in 10 thousand (or more).. But, that same watch with a damaged dial and hands and cracked bracelet would be far less than that..

A fully reconditioned 1655 though, with a Rolex pedigree, will take a damaged watch price and kick it back up to just slightly less than that mint original..

Sam, there is only 1 watch in my collection that willnever be for sale and that is my Seiko, sounds crazy but there is a lot of sentimental value on that one. if you have an offer in mind maybe we can work something out

If the watch is a keeper and you don't plan to sell then I say you're fine. It's your watch, do with it as you please and if that makes you happy....then great!

A 1655 would look pretty nice next to your baby.

If you really wear and enjoy the watch you did the right thing. I think it is a wee bit silly that some of us who can afford $10k watches are worried about a few hundred bucks here or there many years down the road if/when we ever sell them. Relax, look at your watch, and smile!

Value definitely has to come down as most true vintage collectors want 100% original watch. Enjoy it though and if you ever sell it--disclose it and see what happens!
