My new Explorer II has arrived...

I finally pulled the trigger on the current Explorer II and she arrived yesterday just in time to get sized and on the wrist for an evening out with the lovely wife.

The timing of this purchase was hastened by a gift from a very dear aunt. She has been a second mother to me and was probably the most influential person in my life growing up. She never had kids of her own although she looked upon me as her own. Now she is in her 90's and won't be with us for very much longer. As part of her estate planning, she has made gifts to several of her nieces and nephews. The woman who said she never had kids of her own is now helping eight of "her kids" go to college.

She worked for Braniff for 30 years and took full advantage of her travel perks. She had been around the world more times than she could count and instilled the travel bug in me at a young age. She would always stop in to see us in Dallas at the end of one of her trips and brought back cool little trinkets from the exotic places she had been.

My first big trip was when she took me on a cruise to Alaska when I was 15. Since that time, I have made it a goal to see some of the places that she had traveled to more than 50 years ago. At that time, she loved to collect luggage stickers that you placed on your bag so that the porters would know which hotel to send your bag to. She gave me a whole pile in a box when she moved into a care facility and I have slowly been visiting the European cities she traveled to.

As her name is actually Dora (no kidding), I think it is fitting to name the watch "Dora the Explorer" in her honor.

I want to thank everyone here for helping me to choose this model rather than a Sub or the upcoming revised Explorer II. The current version really hits all of my criteria as a great tool watch and a nice compliment to my already healthy selection of dive watches.

Also, props to DavidSW for the great service. I cannot believe how easy the transaction was. I can now say to my wife that the time spent on this forum is saving us money.

i love hearing stories of people gifting to young deserving relatives while they are still alive. then they can enjoy seeing how their hard earned money changes the lives of future generations. i hope to do this one day. harry

Isn't it already a classic as it is more than 20 years old ?

Cool story thanks for sharing.

Enjoy your watch this white dial EXII was also my first Rolex and that started a long journey (pardon the pun)

Lucky you can tell your wife the forum is saving you some money, because she might get a little jealous if you told her you were actually enjoying the experience
