Newbie to the Forum Requests Help My 1st Submariner:5513 ? Authentication Help !
Hi Guys,
Long term Google searcher of RF but was yet to join until today. I feel I have entered a world of like minded lovers of Rolex and many further hours of study and review await me. Been a small time collector of Rolex's since 18 years Old and a passion for all things Rolex since a child. Watches I currently own 1.SS Date Just White metal Bezel 16220 2.SS Oyster Precision 6426 3.SS Oyster Precision 6294 (Roulette Date) 4.Pink Gold / SS Oyster (Golden Egg) 6334 5.SS/Yellow Metal Mid Size Date Just (Wife's) Having been experiencing urges to get into the Rolex Sports watch arena and particularly Vintage Submariners. Am asking for your kind advice on the validation of this piece enclosed in the pictures. Unfortunatly the pictures are of very poor quality, even the Red light from the camera makes the seconds hand look Red (Nice thought though) similar to the MOD's I have seen on RF. Image 1 However I believe ?? its is a pretty standard Sub 5513 With the Guilt Edged markers from around 1983 or 84. Need advice on if this is a true to original watch, I know that the watch has had a new Serv Glass however I am confused at the Markings IMAGE 2 ORIG ROLEX DESIGN ? ( I thought 5513's were Registered Design ?) 5513 Over polished Case is also a concern ? I am in the middle of purchase of this piece however at this time I am unable to get any further pictures.....Damn! Your help will allow me to make a feedback will help me to continue in purchase.... I would appreciate any advice you guys could provide me to reassure me that this is a worthwhile to add to my collection and embarking into Rolex Sports Watch Territory. Your Kind thoughts would be greatly appreciated and questions welcomed. Best regards JC would be great to tap into the network and hope to be a regular to the Forum from now on ( Addiction is kicking in) haha |

Looks ok, but I would try to find a 5513 in better condition, there are a lot out there. I think the lugs have been polished too much, they have lost their satin finish. The hands look like they have aged and could be original, maybe the dial was replaced in the past. I would also try finding a matte version of the 5513, that is just my personal preference though.

Clay, I do agree the pictures are dreadful and lots of reflection.
I have however seen that the dial looks similar to the orig. Please could you be more specific at what looks wrong. I am hoping it is just the bad quality pictures but if there is something really fishy let me know. What you think to the Engraved ORIG ROLEX DESIGN - I thought that was for later SUBS? Wow, I am loving the speed of response TRF Is my new world !!!! |

Again, any comments are purely based on the pictures I am seeing....
The white Gold surrounds look odd??? The "660" looks odd??? I can't really make anything out between the lugs...... I hope that helps a little.... |

Actually the case isn't that bad, yes it's lost it's satin finish but a good watch maker / RSC will easily be able to restore that.
As for the dial, agree in that you need to get better pics as the tritium plots look a little odd. Finally not to sure what price this one is at, but it's transitional model as the watch has a gloss dial and earlier 5513's where Matt - so unless it's a good price, you might want to keep looking for a matt dialed variant |

Hi Phil, Spot on info, Thanks, have already lined up my service guy in the UK Re, Satin brush restore. I would like to get a nice 5512-3 but cant find much under 3K + GBP
Once I get a pic of the dial I will post, would be great to have your comments at that time. It is on at a fair price for the condition and if all is genuine on the dial front will go forth with the purchase. Do want to get myself a Sub and maybe once I get the bug can trade up. Cheers |

Looks authentic, but the case has been polished way too much. I agree with Kyle.

Thanks for all your advice guys, I am awaiting pictures and hope to repost them ASAP.
Agree the case is over polished but if all else is orig , How much would this be worth paying for ? $ USD. I do want to make my 1st sports watch purchase a well priced Gem that could be used to trade up to something more rare later on. Cheers to all the TRF Members help so far. I love the community spirit JC |

I don't know what your budget is, but personally I wouldn't want to be paying more than around £2.2k as long as the dial, hands and bracelet are all correct.
Now regarding the question over the case, all 4 lugs are nice and thick so re-applying the satin finish won't take much of at all - an over polished watch to me, is one that has been polished so much that the lugs are like match sticks.... |

missed out on the Sub
Couldnt get pictures before the seller cancelled my order, he wouldnt ship to a non PP verified address.
Still looking for a non date sub but have a low budget at around $3.5 - $4ish What's the thoughts on 1460 or 1460M ? Looking for clean vintage looking Submariner to put on a Nato, would be nice to have box and papers for future inv value. Or also thinking would it be better to wait for a clean 5513 or 12 and land a piece that requires some work Cheers for all the help Chaps |

No worries. I think you can do better than that one anyway.
As far as what to get, I would take your time and really get to know all the models and all the different variations in each (you'll be surprised how many there are). Then you can decide what YOU really want. You can find most of this information on the internet, and much of it here on this forum. I rushed into my first purchase when I was relatively new to Rolex and was not aware of all the subtle differences between the models and within the model lines. Wish I would have done more homework before purchasing. |

Vintage Subs
Have a 1680 myself. You should be able to find a nice 5513 in your price range. Seems to me that these have really jumped as of late. I'm not sure later models will appreciate as much as these old standards. Take your time.
