Newbie..

Hey Experts

Been flirting with the thoughts of getting a sub (or another sportswatch) from the year of my birth, 1974. I am going to do the same for my three kids (glad the oldest one is from 2001, so still not too expensive )

Doesnt need to come with box, papers etc. but would be nice to have the watch as original as possible.

How deep should I dive into my pocket?

Up til now I have never bought a watch older than 8 years, so I am a complete newbie..

I will start to read the posts in this section.

Thanks a lot Andrew.. Its very easy to pick up a new watch from the local AD, but much harder to pick up the right vintage.. Much more to learn - and that's what I like about it! I will start the information collection/hunt!

Research is your best friend when it comes to vintage. Buy the seller, go see the watch in person if you can and ask questions. I think the journey of finding the right vintage adds to the value. Not to mention the learning process. Good luck!

I agree with David here.....

A nice place to start from 1974 might be a 5513......

THE quintessential Rolex....A timeless classic.....

Much less expensive then a Double Red Sea Dweller (1665)or Red Sub (1680) from that year...

The 5513's are also much easier to find in good condition and the chance of getting a fake is very very slim compared to the "RED" watches mentioned above...

A 5513 fron 1974 should be about 3.7 mil serial number and should have a Feet First Dial....

You're looking at about $5K for a sound, reasonably original 5513 with no box or papers.

I will second that. Also, check out 1675 GMT another must have vintage.

The watch you buy today may be the watch you have to sell tomorrow.....
So spend the extra few dollars and buy the best example you can find....
A watch with "issues" is always harder to sell....

thanks a lot guys - some very useful info! I think my aim will be the 5513 or the 1675 GMT (Pepsi - dont know if it was available in 1974). I am sure that searching for a specific year doesnt make it easier ;-) But I guess that the hunt is a part of the hobby.

but sort of high unless it has original box, papers, etc. Also, preferably, should have a well known seller at that price.
