wife had a prius. traded it on a 400h, over 100k miles no issues. nice car (NO comparison to prius), but uses a lot of tires. if you google its pretty common with that model.

Toyota Landcruiser FJ62 with 190,000 miles,.approx 11-12 mpg. Best vehicle I have ever owned.
Burns 100% organic fossil fuel.

Been thinking about a diesel VW lately, a friend gets 42mpg with his.

2003 Lexus Gs300 , 90k on the odo , haven't sunk a dime in it other than tires and brakes. I Love Toyotas ,and wouldn't own anything else. I did get a 400h as a loaner ,and it was the quietest thing I have ever driven. The car sounds as if it shuts off at the light, also makes no noise when you start it up.

My Prius is at 132k miles, gone through two sets of tires, two mechanical water pumps, starter battery (looks like a motorcycle battery), one lower control arm bushing, dirty throttle body, and the most annoying thing a headlight leveling sensor (causes the dashboard red (!) mark which is as bright as the sun). Averaging 48-52mpg, depending on the seasons. So not bad for a 6 year old car. :)

Wow, all you guys are making me want a Hybrid now :)

My big gas-guzzling V8 only gets 23MPG on the highway at the MOST. $45+ to refill at least 1X per week.

I had rented a Prius. to accomodate a party of 4..and initially, wasnt too excited about it. - Learning curve, with its start up etc...
But after the 2nd weekend rental of the same.. I was starting to get used to it....
Tho I miss the growl start-up of a regular car... but this Prius wasnt soo bad on the windy roads.. Of course I pushed it somewhat..!
Not too bad overall.. but I dont think Id buy one..!

A good Diesel is a dramatically better choice than any interim Hybrid technology.
If you’re interested in fuel economy and emissions, I recommend you have a look down that path instead.

How so? Diesels are at least twice as dirty as a Prius even with urea injection.

Im just going off C02 emissions rather then nitrous oxide and carbon monoxide emissions (the latter of which is a pain to find data for!)

Diesel Fiesta does 3.7 litres/100km with C02 emissions of 98 g/km.
Tioyota Prius does s 4.3 litres/100km with CO2 emissions of 104 g/km,

My personal recommendation for a commuter would be the Hyundi i30 Diesel.
Hyundai i30 does 4.7 litres / 100 km with CO2 emissions of 125 g/km
It’s also not slow with 255Nm of torque available, which is almost 40 per cent more than a petrol engine i30!

The one that really impressed me was the BMW 520d, it may not be quite as economical as a Prius at 5.2L/100, but its not far off at all, yet its an actual car that handles well, is comfortable, and can fit people in it, well worth the compromise.

I found this quote from here: http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/ford-fie...ts-and-review/

Quote:
Ford has released all the pertinent details: it will go on sale on 1 December 2009, at a price of AU$24,990 drive away, significantly undercutting the AU$40k Prius. Critically for headline writers, it’s been officially rated as more fuel efficient than the Toyota’s hybrid Prius.

Peer beneath the bonnet and you’ll find a reworked version of Ford’s 1.6-litre turbo-diesel (66kW/200Nm), which when combined with all the other details nets a fuel combined economy rating of 3.7L/100km — 4.6L/100km in the city and 3.2L/100km on the highway.

By comparison, the Toyota Prius has received a 3.9L/100km combined rating in the same testing — 3.9L/100km in the city and 3.7L/100km on the highway. Although the new Prius has the edge in CO2 emissions — 89 grams of CO2 per kilometre versus 98g/km in the Fiesta.
So even in CO2, it is worse. Add in NOx and especially particulates (which are the causes of city pollution) and it's no competitor.

Physical size, I think the Fiesta can fit INSIDE my Prius.

I know it's not a direct comparison when using government stats from different parts of the planet, as the cars are not the same, but here's a guide from the US Environmental Protection Agency: http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/Index.do

Full Hybrid technology really does work.
Sometimes I worry deeply about NOx emmissions and 2 grams per 100km of CO2. Then I remember that removing the catalytic converter from my BMW and replacing it with a straight pipe gained me about 30hp, and I feel better

I think you may be misinterpreting what I’m getting at.

I’m not trying to draw an emissions comparison between the Fiesta and the Prius because to be honest I really don’t care!
Depending on driving style and environment those 9 grams of CO2 difference are going to fluctuate enough to make any linear long term comparisons pointless.
Also I’m guessing you referenced the 3rd gen Prius emissions rather then the 2nd gen?

What I’m trying to say is that the Prius is a terrible due to it having a gutless engine and flawed handling and a high price tag.
A competent Diesel like the Hyundi i30 provides a better engine with comparable emissions, mated to an infinitely better handling car for 50% of the price!

Although if anyone wants to save the environment, ditch the car and take the bus
