Anybody use an iPhone for photos?

I have noticed a few of the iPhone pictures posted on the forum are geo tagged. This means the GPS location where the photo was taken is in the photo. On firefox, I can just right click the picture to get the exif details, click on the GPS info and have a map pop up showing the location.

There are a couple things involved here.

1.) Disable GeoTagging in your phone.

2.) If you post photos link back to a photo sharing site, make sure you strip the exif out of the photo before posting to the Photo sharing site. You can do this in Photoshop or there may be an option when uploading the photo to the photo sharing site. I just use Photoshop, so don't ask me how to do any other way. I am sure other forum members suggest how to do it without Photoshop.

regards,

Robert

Sound advice, it never crossed my mind about geotagging security implications.

Nice one robsteve!

always take photos with my iPhone. And always have the geotagging turned off. even if its with the iphone's camera app or another app you have bought. Go to location services in the settings menu and turn it off

Good info. This should be a "sticky" somewhere, maybe in the Watchout section.

I have an interest in Cameras as well, so I often check the exif data of photos to see what was used. It has really only be just recently that a lot of the iPhone photos have started showing up with the GPS info in them.

Anybody that has posted pictures shot with iPhones better figure this out. I have seen some pictures of pretty nice watches obviously taken at the person's home. If the pictures are uploaded to the forum software it looks like the eixf info gets stripped. It is really just the photos posted via links to photo sharing serivces that can be a problem. Photobucket seems to be the most common one I see with the problem.

Never really thought about it. I use theTapaTalk app for this forum (a 5 Star app!) when I am at work and my iPhone4 takes amazing HD photos, working seamlessly with that app. Fun to go to the map on my iMac to see where I have taken photos. Amazingly accurate, pinpointing locations to within a few feet.

I refuse to be taken hostage by the possibility of being robbed. I will never change my day to day routines, i.e. not showing my name in this forum, etc. because of a "break-in" at someone's house (see other post).

To give-in and change, means the would-be perpetrators win. If someone wants my watch that bad, I'll give it to them.

I have worked hard to be successful, and I love to share my good fortune with my friends.

Work hard, play hard and don't sweat the small stuff. The map/location feature on my phone is small stuff.

Please don't take offense to my philosophy - I live in a small southern town, where life is still pretty simple (plus I do have a CWP and enjoy target practice as a hobby)!!

Ditto, I also am WELL aware of the geotagging and purposefully leave it on because it serves me.

But again, I also live in the South, and retain full rights, so that could be a factor.

I don't know, but probably any phone with a GPS. I just checked my Blackberry Torch and there is an option in the camera menu to turn GeoTagging on or off. I think my Bold had this as well.

It's easy to turn off in your iphone, I did so on day one. I guess I'm a paranoid fellow. It should be just as easy on the other smart phones.
Don't forget that some of the newfangled, super fancy cameras/DSLR may also have this feature. It's worth a scan of the manual and/or factory website. They may be harder than the iphone to disable as well. My old DSLR doesn't offer this "valuable feature".

I still have a 1999 vintage Canon Dslr, made by Kodak that had a GPS option. It was based on the Canon EOS 1n film camera with a Kodak designed Digital back. In Canon brand it was a D2000, Kodak a DCS520. It could take a PCMCIA type GPS in one of its two memory slots. You could also plug in a GPS though a serial line. I did this once with my Garmin just for kicks. The older Nikons could do this too, but just with the serial connection, no on board GPS.

This is a very interesting thread and I will start double checking my pics before loading them -

by the way I don't need a geotag to recognize the Edmonton skyline - I grew up there. Strange Coincidence I must say.

Keith:

If you have firefox, you can right click the picture and get the exif if you have the FxIF Add-On.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5673/

For the top picture I see 53° 31′ 24.60″ N, 113° 36′ 55.20″ W in the exif.

Also note that if you "save for web" from Photoshop or copy photo within Photoshop it removes EXIF data.

Just for fun I went back and looked at some random photos posted here. I scanned the pages for ones that looked like they were done from a camera phone in a bunch of threads. Guess what. MANY people here taking photos with their iPhone have attached GPS data. If that's you, it's probably best to turn it off. Interestingly some from the same people didn't have ExIF data. Perhaps it relates to how they posted, or saved the photos.

I see this thread is in the open discussion forum now. Just remember when using a smart phone when taking pictures of your cars, dogs, cigars, boats, food, wine, Scotch, beer and etc , that the GPS location could be stored in any picture you post on the forum
