Playing around w/ the camera

I sat down with the camera tonight and snapped a few pics. I took these without natural light - just an old side table lamp. The pics turned out ok. Sorry about the reflections off the crystal, I couldn't seem to find a good angle to get rid of them. I hope you guys like them!

Can you tell me how you all take pics so clearly? Whenever i try taking pics of my watches they turn out like crap... i used a canon digi cam (not the greatest in the world) but i dont know how everyone here takes such awesome pics.

Good pics, Jeff....but reflections with a Rolex crystal can be a pain in the ass.

The important thing is to concentrate on the LCD screen while taking the pictures and make some fine adjustments to avoid those reflections.

It really depends on how much light is coming from the external sources....windows being the biggest culprits as they tend to bounce light all over the bloody place!!

Nice pics Jeff, love the colour contrast in them! Keep it up!

Also, if you can find a white wall, that can be very handy. Bounce the light off it, don't point it directly at the watch. I took this one just sitting on a table facing a white wall, and bounced the flash off the wall.

Black dials are a killer, especially if they do not have an AR coating.

I struggled with this watch until I did the following:

1/ Put it in my light box - i.e. white platic garbage can with lights on the outside. The white plastic is a good light diffuser.

2/ Camera on a tripod, at an angle so that the camera is not reflected on the crystal like your second picture.

3/ Using the timer, set up the shot and start the timer.

4/ Stand behind the camera with a piece of black material held up behind the tripod - this cuts out all other reflections that you might pick up from the crystal.

Not the best shot I've ever taken, but I am relatively happy with this one.

Thanks for the kind words! I really wish I knew more about photography. I just set the camera on Automatic, enable the Macro setting and start clicking away. I also disable the flash. I do try to find something to rest the camera on (I don't have a tripod). Having a real tripod would help a ton. For these pics I rested my hands on my Rolex box to help elimate hand shake - not a perfect solution, but better than nothing.
