LV and the RSC-NYC Experience
This is my longest post ever.............
So I purchased a BNIB SUB LV D SERIAL (2005) from a jeweler. It was originally purchased by an individual so the card was signed 2006 but all the stickers were still on the watch/bracelet when I recieved it. I guess technically I am the third owner; original owner, jewelery store, me..... I had the watch one day and noticed the crown didn't screw down as smooth as my other subs, felt like metal on metal and my other subs are smooth as glass. Even more concerning after a short time wearing it the watch would stop even after a full wind. I bring the watch into the NY RSC for a service estimate and insurance appraisal and prepare for the 20 questions they ask when you buy a Rolex from anyone besides an AD. I couldn't remember the actual jewelers name but they asked several times, "where are they located", "do you recall the name", they really wanted to know this info. After all the where did it come from questions they then tell me since they can't determine the history of the watch right away it will take 5 business days to provide a service estimate. Ok fine whatever. Today I went to RSC and found out the watch was real and not stolen, good news. They did say it required a service AND that the crown was cross threaded against the piece that is screws into, not good. I am not sure how this happened to a new watch, someone probably over tightened or something I guess. They tell me the service inlcudes polishing, changing the bezel insert and all the other mechanical stuff. I agree to the $700 service and tell them, the stickers are on it DON'T POLISH, also I want to keep the old bezel insert and the old crown. They said I can't keep the old crown because it has the rolex logo on it, ok fine. They also said I can't keep the old bezel insert because its the anniversary model. This made no sense to me. I said when you changed the bezel insert on my 14060M you let me keep the old insert, they said its becaues its the anniversary model. So I said don't change it because its brand new and the color is slightly different on the new ones. I ultimately wanted a D or Z LV but was a little concerened that it would need service sooner than later. Unfortunately needing it right away sucks. The store I purchased the watch from sold it at a good price and offered to let me return it for a full refund. I wanted to keep it so they refunded me a few hundred for the service, so overall I am happy to get the service cheap, too bad I will be without it for 4 weeks. Overall I've been to the Rolex service center for appraisals and minor items several times and the Omega service center several times. I will premis this with I like Rolex watches better than Omegas but like the Omega center better for the following reasons, 1) Omega service don't ask a million questions about where you got you watch 2) you actually get to speak to the technician (Fred at Omega NYC is very helpful will spend time with you) 3) I find I know more about rolex watches than some of the people at the front desk and at times they contradict each other 4) at Omega you get a sense you are speaking to real people and not some faceless entity like in the wizard of oz behind the curtain "wizard of rolex". If you been to NYC Rolex you know what I am talking about, they have those weird autmatic doors that they magically appear from behind with your watch. Don't get me wrong I love my current rolex and can't wait until its done. I'll post pictures next month, just my two pennies. |

Great post. I've been to the RSC-NYC many times over the years for similar reasons and I agree with every point you make. There's good and bad there, but in the end, I've had only great service, albeit with the weird interaction with the service people. The lesson is to do your homework before you go there for service, as you did. For example, a lot of people wouldn't know about that bezel-color issue you mentioned, and you certainly won't get that kind of help/advice from the Rolex service folks. Many of them are not that knowledgeable.

I only deal with Dallas now after NYC working on 2 watches to less than satisfaction.
