go big or go home ?

From only trying on in a shop,I like the way the 36mm Explorer 114270 looks and feels on my wrist.The 39mm Explorer 214270 looks and feels too big for me.
For your first 39mm or larger watch, did you initially feel it too large, and over time get comfortable with the look and weight ?
And, I am wondering if some here bought 39mm or larger and ended up not enjoying the robust size.

It depends on your wrist size and personal preferences. I don't care for watches over 42mm or so which is about the size of an Omega Speedmaster. I have a 7.75 wrist too. I have friends with both larger and smaller wrist who wear watches that are 52mm and bigger.

You will get used to the size of the larger case in a few days.

I have the 36mm explorer.......& I had an MKII Vantage....a 39mm homage to the explorer 1016.......the Vantage is the same size as the new 39mm explorer....I prefer the smaller 36mm size for that style(my wrist, a hair or three under 6.75") & sold the Vantage.

I find that its not the just diameter of the watch that determines whether its a good fit. Sometimes as important is the thickness, shape, and whether the lugs are tapered. You really have to try it on, and even then you can't be sure until you've worn it for a few weeks.

I try never to go over 40mm, but the 42mm Panerai Radiomir felt great.

Unfortunately I don't think you can't rent and try 'em out for awhile.

Another "fit" tip.......for me the case length of the watch (lug to lug) is important......if it's a long case length, the watch will sometimes "roll" on a smaller wrist.
a 48mm case length (lug to lug) is max. for me.

everyone is different, hence there are many sizes available to choose from.
my general rule of the thumbs it - if the lugs goes over the edge of my wrist, then the watch is too big for my 7.25" wrist.
i have watches from small-ish up to 44mm in my collection

My wrist is right under 7 and the 36mm Expy is way too small for me. Maybe I have a flat wrist, but I don't like how it looks.

39mm is perfect though perhaps slightly on the smallish side still.

I think it boils down to one thing; personal taste. I don't think your wrist size had much if anything to do with it. Right now the style is to have a larger watch but that may change when comfort becomes more important.

I agree that it is about comfort, along with your personal taste, but why would you assume a larger watch is uncomfortable? I went from the 36mm DJ to the 41mm DJII, and I can't see going back to the smaller case size. Granted, it took a few days and the right link configuration on both sides, but I got use to it... and it is very comfortable on my 7.5" wrist.

The DJ II is a great size watch for me and very comfortable too.Its all a matter of personal taste at the end of the day.

A lot of factors come into play here but bottom line is try the different sizes on and whichever feels right for you is the correct one. If the 36mm seems the best then go for it. I once owned several Omega Seamasters which were 42mm. They were ok but after trying on a 40mm Submariner I quickly realised the 40mm size was right for me. I then tried the GMTIIc which is also 40mm and again it felt great. Needless to say the Seamasters were sold off and I am now 100% happy with my two Rolex watches.

It is not just size, but dial size. If the watch is all dial such as the Explorer as there is no large bezel, it wear larger (look wise) on your wrist. That said, 40mm is the new 36mm.

I have a 7 3/8" wrist, and really like a 42mm watch. 40mm works, 44mm works, but 42mm is just right..... If the Deepsea wasn't so far off of the wrist height wise, it would be perfect. I'm wearing a 42mm watch today.... my Sea Hawk II.

To answer your question; yes...... initially I thought 44mm was hideously large, now it is normal size. I really like my PAM 177.

The size of the wrist does matter IMHO.....I have a 9 1/2" wrist my lager Rolex sport watches look great,but my DD looks a little bit lost in comparison.Guess I have the same but opposite problem.
