Earned your Dolphins?
Have any of you Submariner fans actually earned your Gold or Silver Dolphins? That's why I bought mine. Also I was born in 1953.

Perhaps this thread would garner more activity if you explained what "earning your Dolphins" means to the uninitiated. I am quite sure that I am not the only one that has no idea what you are talking about.

I was just have a little fun with all of you! I rode two different types of Navy submarines and I wanted to see if any other forum member had done the same.
I recently got enough money to purchased a Submariner 116613 and I love it. I now see what all the fuss is over these exceptional watches!! By the way, it is pronounced sub-ma-RIN-er not sub-MAR-in-er :-) |

Former 1120 here...1120 is the warfare designation of a nuclear submarine officer. There were plenty of Subs (both real and fake) worn onboard both the boats I was stationed on. Due to the common occurence of seeing them, I ended up using my last bonus before I got out on a Milgauss. Then the bug bit me again, and I picked up a Pepsi GMT with my first bonus from my civilian employer.
Silver Dolphins are awarded to the enlisted crew members and gold dolphins for the officers. The enlisted award focuses on mastering the damage control equipment onboard the ship while an officer's dolphins are earned for tactical merit (ie conducting a periscope depth approach on a surface ship). In the old days, we would put the "fish" at the bottom of a pint glass and you would have to "drink your fish". Not so much anymore...as you can imagine. |

I was on a sub once
One of my submariners was on board a nuclear attack sub in San Diego in the late 1970s (I was a guest of a sub officer). Does that count?
I've also worn either an Explorer I or a sub no-date while flying twice around South America in C-141s supplying U.S. Embassies. They've also flown on a few C-130 missions (once doing assault take-off and landings) and UH-1N chopper missions over the Canal Zone, in Panama. My old Explorer I was also driven from Panama to Randolph Air Force Base, Texas via the Pan-American Highway. Great watches. I never get tired on wearing them. |

We don't even swim in the oceans. But we will always know what time is even if we get in the north Atlantic in a storm or some disaster. We always know for sure what's the time within -4/+6 sec/day during the 10 minutes survival. That's why we got our $10K Subs from our trusty AD in the first place to make sure we are safe for the first 300mm deep into the ocean or taking a shower with. Che, |

I served in the Italian navy as a conscript and despite being a divemaster at the time they put me on kitchen work instead of divers ...
Closest i been to a submarine is I saw an american one in Sardinia that is based at the S.Stefano US navy base there.....we were in a rib and we got within like 50 metres of it, was really cool... |

Really small world
Nicko,
I flew to Sardinia in April 1984 to meet the USS Sculpin for the last third of a six month MED deployment. We probably crossed path as I had to wait on board the Orion for a couple of days. |
