Please Give Your Thoughts on This Question

Hi Guys

A friend of mine is in the market for a new watch & asked my opinion. He's mid fifties, quite wealthy but is the type of guy to not show it. He drives a VW Phaeton when he could afford a Bentley. He lives in a very nice house (in fact owns several in different countries) in a very nice area but it's not the biggest in his street. He wears a Sub everyday & has done for about 12 years now. He's always been very happy with his Sub but an associate of his has suggested a Patek Nautilus 5711.

I have suggested vintage Rolex, which I thought would appeal to his business mind, but he's not keen. So I suggested that as he's happy with the reliability of his Sub why not a new one? But he wants to spend a bit more!! So I suggested a platinum Day Date II non diamond dial. It's understated, has the same reliable movement and will hold it's value like the Patek. Plus, it should have a good weight on the wrist.

I also said I would ask here to get educated opinions.

What do you guys think? Patek or Rolex? What are the pro's & cons? Bearing in mind it will be worn everyday.

Thanks in advance.

Is your wealthy friend really going to listen to what we think he should buy?

I wouldn't consider most Pateks a Daily watch. Rolex is more durable, however the nautilis maybe different, and lets face it your friend may or may not engage in activities which are that hard on a watch.

If it were me, and I were getting a Patek it wouldn't be a sports watch. I personally would rather have a Rolex sports watch and a Patek perpetual calendar or annual calendar.

He doesn't do gym work but either cycles or runs a couple of times a week and swims when abroad.

It's a little hard to compare these two watches, if I'm honest, especially as the Rolex is double the price of the Patek - the Rolex will also depreciate like a lead balloon, that's the curse of a precious metal watch. The Day-Date II is incredible on the wrist in Platinum, the weight is something else, feels beautiful. I can't comment on how the Patek feels, but the movement will be far superior, and will carry more horological kudos.

I'm personally not a fan of Patek's designs, however much I admire their movements, and for me, precious metal Rolexes don't appeal. If I was spending that kind of money on a watch, I'd be looking at maybe a Lange & Sohne

The DD II will hold its value only to the extent that you write off the enormous and immediate depreciation that will occur once it changes hands. Yes, Rolexes and Pateks generally hold value well, but I would expect a DD (precious metal) to take a much bigger hit in depreciation than the Patek.

My contribution is that if your friend is rather discrete, I would tend to think a platinum DD would be preferable over a DDII....

I would recommend he stay in stealth mode and buy a Casio. One of my former bosses who is still on the Forbes list wore the one with a calculator!

If we look beyond Rolex or Patek, then I would also agree with Chris!

I would take a steel PP Nautilus 5711 over the Day Date II in a heartbeat. Its not even close. The Nautilus is an absolute classic and the DD2, well, isn't. Obviously it depends entirely on personal preference, and the Nautilus is intended to be a luxury sports watch.

Nautilus doesn't strike me as a showy watch. I suspect the only people that would notice it would be WIS. The down side is that the metal is kind of soft & they tend to get scratches easily. He should probably try one on as well, the shape of the case doesn't work for some.

Have him look at some other high end names - like Blancpain
or Jaeger LeCoultre - lots of choices out there. And he might
appreciate having something beyond Rolex and Patek which
are more widely marketed.

For JLC, their Master Tradition and Master Control series
are pretty nice. And mostly understated.

I would suggest that your friend get the most expensive Rolex there is out there. Probably a platinum or some vintage super expensive. Now, since Rolex is a non profit organization that gives lots and lots of money to charities tell your
wealthy friend that has many houses in many countries do give the equivalent of that Rolex price and a house to some charities organizations or to some homeless shelters to help the poor people of this country.

How about that? Will he do that? I bet you my TT Sub that he will no do that.

this is not a serious poll my friend
You're comparing apples to oranges
A rolex which is much more expensive than a Patek 5711

If you want to compare it with a Patek in the same price league, you can get this 5960R. Which is a red gold complicated watch. Annual calendar + chonograph

And in this case the Patek wins every time

I know this is a Rolex forum but I think you must be mad to choose a platinum Rolex if you can get this Patek for almost the same price

Che,
What a stupid answer. You don't know what my friend does for charity. Plus, I bet some homeless people would think it's disgusting you own a Rolex when you could donate that money to charity. Will you sell your Rolex and give all the money to charity? I don't think so, bro.....

Please read my open question again. It's not the price. You seem to be confusing complicated movements with price. It's a discrete watch my friend wants- not something that will attract attention.

I compared two watches where the only complication was a date function, so they are both equal in that sense. The only other differences are metal used & brand. Both watches don't even have a rotating bezel. Why you are bringing complicated movements into the equation is very strange...

No, stupid answer bro, just an honest suggestion for your rich multi houses and expensive platinum watches friend hard working friend.

Well, I'm not working for my money, so to speak. I play cards in Vegas for the last 25 years. My office is all the high rollers poker rooms in Vegas where I take money from the rich. And yes, I give lots of money to charities shelters, to the Catholic Church communal kitchens here in Vegas where the poor can get a free meal. Yes I do I donate more what your Rolex is worth. This I know for sure what money goes out of my winnings for the good of the poor.

Because at that price point it seems logical that you would choose for that watch with the most horological merits.

If you are looking for a discreet watch I think the Patek is more discreet than a Rolex. A regular member of the public is unlikely to know what it is versus the high profile of the Rolex. Rolex make a great watch but given a "money no object" choice I'd take the Patek any day.

Since I find both of the choices quite unattractive I'd suggest he keep his sub.
