Sea Dweller 1665 Great White Crystal Question

I'm looking into getting my first vintage Sea Dweller and I am looking at the 1665 Great White. I absolutely love the domed plexi on them. I have noticed that some seem to have a dome shape and some have more squared edge.

Can someone explain this? Why are some domed and some not? What serial numbers should I be looking at in order to get the domed crystal.

Thanks for any input.

The 1665 should be using the Tropic 39 super dome crystal. The dome crystal that is slightly square along the edge before the dome is a service tropic 39 crystal that Rolex uses when the watch is serviced.

Ah...thanks for that Frogman4me.

Anyone one have any images of the Tropic 39 vs the service crystal?

You and me both, I like the top hat on the 1680 as well. Vintage is the way to go. Good luck on your search.

A word of caution....IF you intend to wear the watch in water, I would recommend a SERVICE CRYSTAL........The Super Domes, because of age, have a tendency to form small cracks around the outer edge and leak....Just a heads up...Look forward to seeing your 1665.......Here's mine....

Holy Smokes Clay!!!!!!!!! What a beauty! Really what a stunning example of the Great White! Wow...Just makes me want one even more!

Thanks for that very sound advice to a newbie. I'm not sure I'd be diving/swimming with it but it would be definitely getting wet, as I live in Miami and the water is a part of life over here.

Is that a service crystal on yours?

Thank you....And yes, that's a service crystal......I actually prefer them as they don't distort the dial markers.....

I was going to give you the exact same advise.

If you plan to use your 1665 in/around water, go for the service crystal.
