$5k for a Rolex..which model would you buy?
If you had $5,000 for a Rolex (or Tudor)..which model would you buy? New, Pre-loved, doesn't matter.
Just looking for the best for the money |

I would look for a preowned 16600 Sea Dweller.

16600
I think that the 16600 Sea Dweller is the best to get for $5K. It has everything you want in a Rolex - great history, great movement, timeless look, cool features like the EV and no doubt it will only increase in value in the future. I'd also look into a Rolex Sub 1680... though I'd go with the SD first.

This, although a Sea Dweller with lug holes would be nice also. You really can't go wrong with anything in the Submariner Class.

What size do you prefer, 36mm or 40? If 36, you can almost certainly find a BNIB Explorer I for that price depending on which ADs still have them. If you prefer a larger piece, I think you could likely find a dealer willing to part with an Explorer II for $5k. A new Sub no-date wouldn't be entirely out of the question either, but not quite as easy to locate.

Well this all depends on a number of factors doesn't?! Do you already own any Rolex watches? If so you will probably not buy a second one of a model you already have! Ok, here is my attempt at an answer:
1) Assuming you don't have any Rolex watches then I'd go for the Submariner. A classic watch and an all-rounder which can be worn anywhere at anytime. 2) Assuming you are me and already have a Sub and GMT then I'd look for a pre-owned Tudor Chronograph (given the options you outlined above). 3) Everyone on this forum will have a different opinion and you won't get a consensus. 4) Why not just for the watch that 'sings' to you most within your budget range? This makes most sense to me. M |

There is a Y-serial GMT for $3000, nicely beat-up, a bit south of me.
And a $2000 ladies DJ, jubilee/pink/stick/fluted. |

I would purchase a GMT II with either the Pepsi or Coke bezel insert.
If it had to be a Submariner, I would go with a late 1970's 1680. I would also consider a "big block" Tudor chrono - which is another beautiful watch. Good luck in your decision.
