That's the dial layout.

I was thinking a lot less $$ than a Lange/Patek/VC/AP.

Arabics are harder to get on a dress watch as many of them use roman numerals instead. Some of the only ones I can think of are the Lange 1815, and the Breguet 5177. Both of which match your specifications exactly, up until the build material. (both are WG)

Here are a few of my suggestions. First is (my favorite) the IWC Portuguese Handwound, which perfectly matches your requirements. The movement is in-house and the finishing superb.

Another is the JLC Reverso, this also perfectly matches your requirements and is a watch witha beautiful history. It's handwound.

Some more I can think of off the top of my head around that pricerange are the JLC Master Ultra Thin, and the Blancpain Aqua Lung (which is slightly less dressy).

The IWC Port is 44mm. A bit too big but a nice piece.
Reverso is not my cup of tea.
I actually prefer an ETA movement.

How about a Stowa Marine Original? SS, handwound Unitas 6498, arabics on white or black dial, 41mm, about $1000 with shipping (and a 4 month wait for them to build it). I don't have this exact watch but I have a Stowa Fleiger Baumuster B and it is a very nice piece of machinery.

with ETA, you have the following choices:

Longines: (all classic re-editions)
WWW re-issue
Expeditions Polaires
Silver Arrow (new model, not vintage)..this one doesnt have arabic numerals but is an extreme class in style and looks...way to elegant and classy...and this is also based on a vintage model...oh but it doesnt have sub-seconds either...do check it out though.

Tissot:
Heritage Limted Edition (an exact match of what you are looking for:SS, sub-seconds, chronometer certified, classic, limited edition, ETA, arabic numerals, classy applied lume, extremely elegant, your recommended size....only problem is, its been out of production so acquiring one might be a problem but its worth the effort :)

there are many other I can think of in the styles I've told you cuz this is one I am myself very interested in and my recommendations are the price point I am looking at too...so hope my suggestions fit your bill.

There are some models from Longines, I think from Heritage collection, you should check out them.
Good luck!

Despite the date window, (IMO, watch would look better and more like the original w/o the date) it's an interesting watch.

Do you know the price?

the MSRP I think is around $1500 but it can be had gray/used for around $1000 I am guessing...it is awesome and I know of someone who is trying to get a black base date wheel so it will make even the date so much more acceptable :)
