Rolex guy needs PAM advice
Hi there,
I normally don't look in the PAM section as I have always been a Rolex collector. But I need your help. One of my friends is looking at selling his Panerai to make his mortgage payments and I wouldn't mind helping him out and start getting into broadening my watch collection. I am 100% sure it's legit and he agreed to let a dealer take a look at it, so that doesn't concern me. But he doesn't have box and papers and even though he's a good friend, that's where I start getting worried. He claims he bought the watch used and it came like that. I have no reason to doubt him, but on the other side, I want to know what I am buying. He claims it's a special piece - and that's where I need help. It's steel with a black dial and it says "Luminor Power Reserve" on the dial. Here is what is on the back of the watch: OP 6525 BB10109XX C1XXX/2000 Can anyone help me figure out what it is and how old it is?

still worth getting it checked out as you may trust your friend but do you trust the person he bought it from.

Go with him to a PAM dealer and see what they will offer him. I assume they will inspect it fully. Plan in advance he will turn to you with a "should I sell it or hold off?" (hold off = you'll buy it for more $$.) Meanwhile, see what that model is selling for used.

Does anyone have any good reputable websites for used Panerai watches, where I can do some research on pricing?

You can look here or WUS or TZ for some pricing info. But without paper or boxes, he won't be able to ask for top dollar.

I am not sure why I feel like I have to defend myself but here is my reply: First of all no place in my post does it say "try to get the dealership to buy it" You are getting them to appraise it for trade-in value. AND if you read the OP 1st message - he desired to get confirmation that everything checks out with the watch. Kills two birds with one stone. Who knows the AD might give him more than what web prices are. Did you bother to see that I said 'to see what the model is selling for used?' ?? That would imply using that as a guideline for an offer to his friend. Lastly, true value is only what someone is willing to purchase it for. So true value is a very arbitrary thing. In the future, do I have to make a 3 page response to spell everything out so people like you can't think of negative things to say in response? |

my reply was based on how your post read to me, "see what they will offer him" I read that as the dealer, then you have just confirmed this by saying "You are getting them to appraise it for trade-in value",I was making the point that a dealer or trade in would in most cases give the worst value, and your comment "he will turn to you with a "should I sell it or hold off?" sounds like you know this already, different again to your "fuller" post,so to answer your question, then yes you better had make a 3 page response if what you want to say can't be said in a few lines, seems to me you have way over reacted here, not sure if you have been upset by something else but it's a forum and open for comment, like you I didn't want to take 3 pages to reply, hope you feel you can post without taking replies too personal as that was not my intention. |
