When does patina start to show?

I saw a nice 1987 Explorer II on the 'bay and the markers had a nice, and very evident, patina on them.

http://cgi.ebay.ca/VINTAGE-87-ROLEX-...item51971cb27d

Is 1987 a bit early to have that much patina, or does it look about right?

And out of curiosity, what do you think about this particular listing?

Thanks.

That patina is as expected for the age. There is a fair amount of deterioration of the lume and that scuff on the bezel will need a bit of polishing. The crown on the clasp show a lot of previous buffing.

It still has a few days to go so I have no idea as to where the price will go from here.

IMO I would keep looking.

It depends, some watches develop patina and some don't. This one looks pretty good, a little pitting on some markers but it looks nice to me.

Patina is ok.... anyone else notice the crown guards were over polished so they are kind of pointy???

Yes Pav--I do! I would pass on it--markers are also pitted.

Yeah, the bezel mark and pitting are apparent.... didn't catch the crown guard issue though. Thanks.

The patina of the indices is consistent with that of all the hands.
