to wind or not to wind

ok, so i'm new to all this winding business having had quartz watches for a long while.
i work in the construction industry so don't wear my rolex during the day at work.
My question is, and forgive me if it has been covered before, am i better off winding it every evening or two, letting it stop and winding it when i wear it next or buying one of those auto winding thngs?
I'm just a bit concerned that the gaskets on the crown will become worn if i keep winding it.

You will wind it, performing about 40 or so full turns of the crown. It should then have a reserve of at least 48 hours or more, even if you don't wear it at all. If you wear it for even a little while, the movement of your wrist will wind it, thus extending the time until it winds down fully.

If you have several automatic watches, and if you wear them in rotation, so some don't get worn all the time but you want them to be fully wound and ready to go, then a watch winder works well. I have one:

However, if you have one or perhaps two watches, and you wear them on a fairly regular basis, then you probably don't need a winder. Hope this helps!

Could you wear your watch at work?

I only ask because I'm also a newcomer to the automatic watch world, and was initially a bit shy about where I wore my watch and what I did with it. I was protective.

Having seem some mates' Rolexes go off for service looking like they needed to be condemned, and seeing them come back looking brand new I now wear my watch all the time. It has some scratches and is developimg some character but now my other watches live in their boxes.

Now, I don't work in construction so I'm not comparing jobs, but do you think you could wear it at work?

Hi Peter.
Its a bit different for me as i bought this watch after the death of my father so am reluctant to wear it for work.
Of course, if i didn't work in the building industry it would be a different kettle of fish but i'm keen to look after it as i would like one of my sons to have it and so on.

Wear it however it makes YOU feel comfortable. If you don't want to wear it somewhere, don't. If it stops running, wind it

Even thought I don't know you, I'm sorry to hear about your father. It is the memories that are important, my friend

That's for sure, and it shows how deeply personal some watches are. I bought mine as an act of self-congratulation for passing an exam; it hardly deserves to be nurtured.

Yours, on the other hand, represents a deeply personal event. My sincere condolences. As Brandon says, you have to wear it how it feels right, and it sounds like your son will inherit a great watch. Doubtless my daughter will get a bag of Rolex parts.

For yourself, I hope you wear yours in the best of health as it tells the current time and reminds you of a time passed.

Look basically a automatic is still a manual wind watch, except for a winding rotor a few extra gears and a slipping clutch. No harm what so ever will be done by manually winding your watch, have a few from the 1920s wound up nearly every day.Watch winders are not really necessary with watches that have simple complications like the date. Now if you want to rest a watch for a period of time say a few weeks or months. Then just a small wind say once a month is all thats needed just to keep the very very small amount of oil circulating around the watch. And a occasional wind or more, will not harm like you say gaskets or crown,in-fact manual winding now and then keeps the oil around the winding stem gear.
