OK..I think I'm officially crazy..

Only one week after buying my first Rolex, see post here:

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=163309

I am already thinking of moving on to my second  ...I mean the 16610 is truly a very nice watch but I have become accustomed to large watches in the 42-45mm range and every time I put the 16610 on my wrist I dont feel too impressed...I am very aware that quality and weight are not proportional in any way...but I think I want more heft :bounce:..

So I am ehmmm..looking at trading the 16610 for a DSSD  ...has anyone here made the switch? Do you think it is worthwhile? I am asking for your opinion cause a LNIB 16610 is not going to be very easy to replace a short time for now :( ...and I cant keep both for 4 reasons:

1) I have self limited my collection to around 6 watches so need to move one to buy another
2) I might not have the budget for 2 expensive Rollies
3) My girlfriend will kill me...
4) My girlfriend will kill me...

In my eyes, apart from the obvious size difference there are a few advantages to it which I think I really like (I only listed those which interest me..for example 3900m vs 300m WR rating is not important to me):

- Larger markers and hands
- Better lume
- Better clasp
- Upgraded movement

Thanks for any help and opinions...

I would not trade a 16610 for a DSSD, but if you really would prefer the weight and size, then go for it.

Personally not a big fan of the DSSD (and I do like big watches) but if you like it, go for it! And, yes, like the rest of us you are kinda crazy.

I can see a big problem already - it's time for a new girlfriend

In all seriousness, if you like it, go fir it. Be your own boss.

Btw - it's not crazy, it is quite common amongst us watch nuts

I would NOT make the trade. I personally love the DSSD and it is certainly an engineering tour de force, but it is more of a specialty watch and I don't think that it is anywhere near as versatile as a classic 16610. Combine that with the fact that the 16610 has been recently discontinued, it will be much harder to replace.

Well,...I can't address the girlfriend issue, I have enough trouble with the wife issue.

Here's something to consider though.

You have a collection of six watches. How well or in what capacity does a watch the size of the DSSD fit?

As you say, your preference is in the 42-45MM range. The DSSD fits there. I agree with all you have stated about the DS with the addition of a true 60minute insert. One has to go to the rarified atmosphere of the Mil. Sub. to have that capability---the girlfriend/wife issue comes up here.

While it's certainly true they don't make the 16610 anymore it's not a hard one to find.

The main issue that seems to arise with the DS is one of thickness and here, again, I have to get back to "how would it fit" in a collection of six watches.

Personally I could build a pretty strong case that such a speciality piece would blend quite well in a collection of that size.

I would definitely try the DSSD on first before buying it if you haven't done so already. It is huge compared to the 16610. I have tried it on and it is just not comfortable. Also the watch sits extremely high on the wrist. I would stick with the 16610.

Go Deep I say. The Deepsea is unique, new, and a dynamic watch!

Thanks for your replies mates ;-)...

The irony lies here ...

I tried DSSD on a couple times when in London last November. I was sure it was not for me due to its thickness and it's writing on that (somewhat uneeded) ring in the case...

So I completely dismissed it when on the search for my first Rolex ..

Now I feel myself strangely attracted to it...also as someone pointed out I miss the full minute markers on the bezel as so..

If you don't like the 16610, then you'll find yourself wering other watches from your (wall clock sized! ) collection, so I say go with what you want... because THAT is what you'll want to wear.

thanks guys for all your replies...

I think I'll keep it for a few weeks and see from there. It is no pain at all keeping the 16610

IMO if I were to look for a bigger watch I would look elsewhere. Anything bigger than a 40mm for a sport Rolex is too huge. To each his own I guess.

the Sub is an all around every day watch. The DSSD is more of a specialty tool watch. I agree with sea-deweller's suggestion. BTW, you ate not crazy. I have been wanting to buy another Rollie as soon as I bought my 1st one.

I too tend t wear the larger watches. What I found with the 16610 wasn't it's physical size but the smaller markers and hands. This made the watch look smaller IMO. The maxi dial makes the LV appear larger

Do what you think is right.

You are in good company here, we are all a bunch of watch nuts here.

You should not give up the 16610 so easily - it is a timeless classic worthy of passing down to your children (whether they are with your GF or not). :-)
