1974 mkIV DRSD without DR dial appraisal

Hi again everyone,

My previous thread was deleted, so i'm re-posting in accordance with the rules now. I'd like to find out how much this watch is worth. The dial was replaced with a 78 rail dial.

Thanks in advance

from previous experience ..the watch will es valued as a white seadweller or slightly less..(weirdly)...the cost of a drsd dial in good condition is so much that it actually means a donor watch to restore has to be cheap..so to the white dweller buyer it isnt original ..to the drsd buyer its a big project... and usually the buyer will be trade to take the mission on....so if it were me i'd be offering £7k region.

ps. it isnt a rail dial thats in there now..and the anchor isnt right.

To value it should see inside caseback, ser # and ref # without bracelet, the right DR dial is very hard to find out and very expensive, it has a service acrilyc too it hasn't a superdomed tropic 39, is it the correct crown?... what I can see I can't tell worth

As stated, that's not a rail dial.

The end links don't match....
Someone also squashed the box insert which isn't nice.
It looks like the watch needs a service.

I'd say you might get around AUD$9K- that is what they are going for I believe.

I think for me it isn't a question of what it is worth-it is a question of who will buy it being a mixed watch and not original. It will be tough to find a buyer IMHO.

Looks like someone woke up Frankenwatch and he is coming after you. He will avoid you if you simply hide your credit cards, cash and bank accounts.

Welcome to the Forum!

IMHO $13-15K, as is.

The problem is--won't be easy to find a correct dial for it. I would recommend checking with Bob Ridley or checking on VRF.

There is a lot on that watch that would devalue, rather than enhance it's value..

Hands may or may not be tritium, but certainly were replaced.. If it was a DRSD at one time, as everybody has stated, it no longer is and therefore would not command red prices..

The bracelet seems to be about to fall apart, especially worn center links, and the end-links do not match, so, again, it has been scrounged together..

The box, tags, watch and parts appear to have been put together to form a "package", and so the price would reflect this..

I'm not sure how you could call it a Mk IV DRSD when it's the dial that would make it so, and the dial isn't there.. The hands and dial are where the most value is on a vintage wtch, especially the more rare models..

Certainly there is a market for this watch, but I think that it would be less than a white in better condition.....

Nothing like the truth-the whole truth and nothing but the truth-no punches pulled. That will be a tough package to sell---most wouldn't touch it!

Watch out!!
FrankenWatch is coming for you!

I think it has already been well said here.

Only thing else I would like to see is a pic of the movement
and caseback.

Its a project watch and should be priced accordingly. To a person with a dial that belongs in that watch it might be worth a little more than for the person that wants to buy it at a big discount and look for the dial etc.

Thanks for all the input guys. Wow, a lot about this watch that I didn't know. I guess for now, i'll avoid selling it. Hopefully when I graduate, I'll have enough to restore this watch to DR status.

Thanks again

For me I would want a look at the movement. Something that makes me nervous is from your picture the crown seems a bit low in relation to the crown guards which could be a sign of a non Rolex movement (ie ETA ) could just be the angle but on top of the rest of mix/match I'd def want a look inside

Is there anyway to simply remove the back plate? or will I have to take it to a specialist to see the movement?

I think what he meant to say was " It would be better just looking for a complete drsd". In any case, I'll be taking it to a watch maker today to have the case removed, and I'll post pics of the movement tonight.

I Went to an antique jewelry shop in Sydney, and the owner offered me a max. of $6,000. Very disappointing... . He said even if it had the original dial, he'd only give me $10,000 for a complete DR.

A proper dial would run about $6-7K. Hopefully hands will match.

$6K is ridiculous. Do not fall for that!

If your watch was 100% original DRSD complete--it would be worth roughly $28k-30k USD not $10k. A mint one without papers sells here in US for $23k or so--give or take a few thousand depending on how nice and if it has RSC papers or not. Unfortunately yours is mixed and matched--so my suggestion is to either go and find a DRSD dial which will cost a lot-or keep it and enjoy it as it will not attract a lot of buyers and my guess is you do not want to dump $3k or 4k into it.

Lele--I am just talking about a dial!!! DRSD dial alone--costs $3k+ for a real one--and in good condition!
