15K Max... What to buy?
OK
Just sold my Hublot (Thanks Mosco!!) It was a beautiful watch but my wrists are just too small to wear it comfortably. With those funds and adding a little bit I have a max budget of 15K and have NO clue what I want! 42 mm or smaller. Not a dress watch, must have a screw down crown so I can wear it in the water. Part of me says just get a Rolex Day Date already. Part of me likes the AP ROO Diver. I think the JLC Navy Seal Diver alarm is nice (I love the alarm on a sports watch!) but its 44 mm and bigger than I want. I do not want something I am gonna be scared to wear. Help me with some suggestions here guys... I am open, I am looking to get one piece (11-15K) I do not want to get 2 or 3 pieces with those funds.

For me: either AP Diver or Daytona. Not sure if I could make them my daily wear wear or not, but I would try.
For AP, do you Armen D? |

HaHa yeah I have known Armen for years....
Id get it through Greg AKA Mosco if I was going AP. The Daytona is a nice piece but if I buy one I am getting an early Zenith and not ready to go there yet.... The DD and ROO Diver are the leaders of the pack in my mental battle here for sure.... Some have said the VC Overseas but I just don't get warm and tingly from them, others have said the Glashutte Original diver but I just am not in love with it. I really do like their Senator Navigator (especially the perp cal) but I don't like to have watches without a decent WR rating for regular wear. Still open to go suggestions of other options I guess though.

Jeremy,
what about a Ulysse Nardin, from their Diver series?

Beautiful pieces Greg and an amazing company.
I had the ULN Blue Wave and I wish I did not sell it. Despite that I just still am not feeling one for this purchase... I wish it could be the YMII but its still a bit out of my reach. It is looking like the Day Date or the ROO Diver are going to end up winning this fight.

I'd go with an AP if I had those amount of funds allocated for a watch. Good luck on your next purchase!

Jeremy, I think it not oply depends on what you like but what you already have. If you don't have any AP's I would recomend some diversity and go for the AP.

My vote is AP. Love my 15300 and the RGRC. The Diver (I guess it's the 'tweener) would be my next AP - get a bracelet for it though.

What I want is the YM II but I just don't have
that kinda coin in hand... Thats an AMAZING piece! I like the ROO diver but I do not like ROO Chronos, they are just very uncomfortable to me. The Diver case is a bit smaller and it has a tang buckle which I rather have on my watches. I have a beautiful ultra thin manual AP my father passed down to me that he bought in France in the late 50's or early 60's. The JLC Alarm is amazing and I love a tough watch with an alarm but I want a watch with an alarm to wear when traveling, hunting, camping etc and I know the 44 mm for that type of use will begin to bother me. I just don't know what I am gonna do.... I do want a Day Date and I know I will own one someday soon and when I do it will be a true long term piece but not sure if now is the time yet. I am very lucky to have such a tough decision to make!

Nice pic
Was at my AD the other day as he was considering purchasing my Hublot and I tried on the RG RC he was wearing, it is a STUNNING watch, just does not fit me well due to the clasp and the lugs, same problem I had with my Hublot and smaller wrists... I will admit I LUSTED after the RG Rubber Clad for quite some time, almost pulled the trigger a couple times but luckily I admitted to myself it did not fit well or comfortably on me. The 15300 is a stunner and classy piece for sure, just a little too mature and sophisticated for a schlub like me HAHA

I'm thinking of letting my F series mint 118238 DD go and when I make up my mind it will be on the sales forum.

You could try the RGRC with the Diver rubber strap and tang buckle. Makes it fit better much better than the stock strap and deployant.

Below your budget- Panerai has a couple of models in 42mm that have alarms.....I think one of them may even come in 18K gold model.

Yeah the Panerai is a Rad case, its the PAM 98 with a GP Movement.
I had it and just too much of a dress watch versus a sports watch. The alarm is WEAK as well on there. It sounds like its dying when it goes off. Another BIG complaint is its WR rating... 30 meters. No thanks! When traveling I want to be able to shower and even jump in the pool if I desire without having to take my watch off and hide it. After my PAM 233, I will keep away from PAM mostly.... There are a couple models with the ETA movement Id still purchase someday but that is it for me an Panerai! As for making the AP ROO RG RC work, yeah thats what my AD said as well and then I have to buy the strap, the buckle etc etc... No thanks, I do not feel like spending a fortune to make the watch work for me. I know I would wake up one day and ask myself why I am trying to make a watch work for me and realize it just isn't gonna happen and sell at a huge loss...

AP ROO Diver for sure if a RC is not your cup of tea.
I had the same feelings you do for the Overseas until a friend of mine showed up with the new Titanium Dual Time on the rubber strap, it changed my entire perception of the watch, I liked it a lot.

If I had that sort of money, I would stretch it slighty and get a PP Nautilus. Preferably the 5712. Before you tell me it's ugly, go and try it on your wrist. I used to think it was ugly...
The very last watch I'd ever buy would be a Rolex Day-Date. No offence to owners, but the same old, same old workhorse Rolex movement, only wrapped in gold? Not good vfm, IMO. |

I would NEVER say the 5712 is ugly, it is a beautiful watch.
I used to lust after it but after I handled on and saw the 5960P it all changed. When I buy a Patek it will be a 5960P, that is just truly my realistic in this lifetime grail. I have already come close a couple times to selling most everything to buy it but I just can't do it yet. IWC has GREAT watches! My last generation Ti Aquatimer Chrono is one of my favorite watches and I also have a Rose Gold Portugese Chrono which my wife bought me for a wedding present. I do not know but part of me says sell a couple other pieces and just get the Yachtmaster II, no matter what anyone says about it it is one of the most amazing movements made.... It is sorta the White Elephant of the current production models. It really all comes down to: YM II, DD, DD II and ROO Diver. YMII, DD or DD II would all be Yellow Gold models. I can comfortably wear any of them on my 6.8 in wrist. Still part of me feels my debate should really be the 36 mm DD YG with White Dial and Romans or AP ROO Diver.

Jeremy, I love every watch on your list, and really couldn't fault a selection of any of them. It has been my own experience though, that if I can't get one particular model off of my mind, it's going to keep gnawing at me even after I pick up something else. Think really hard about whether there is another piece in your collection that you might not miss too badly if it were replaced with that YMII. That looks to me like what you really want next. If you just can't stand to part with anything else in your current stable, then my vote would be for the AP.
For me, the elephant in the room is a Lange 1, but it's still very far in the future for me. |

The funny thing is that I just remembered I have a BEAUTIFUL mint TT Oysterquartz and a Omega Pre Moon Speedmaster which I think are going to be listed VERY soon as well as some various Rolex schwag I have :)
Part of me still wonders a bit inside if its just a passing itch or if it is really love.. I don't think I could go wrong with a DD or a DD II either.... Despite my small wrist (6.8) I think Id go with the DD II now that I actually think about it over the DD since I am much more casual at this point in my life, perhaps 36 mm when I grow up and start to dress like a adult more often HAHAHA BUt still DD II YG White Dial and Romans or YM II YG

How about a new 40.5mm JLC alarm? The European version is 959 pieces, the US version (bottom photo) is 359 pieces. Either one is 9500 euros.

Jeremy, admit it, you REALLY want the YMII. You won't be satisfied till you get it. You'll have it forever, so spend a few extra $ now, before the prices go up (again!!!).
PS. have you seen the price of gold lately? Better get that beast sooner rather than later...

I was very let down when I found out the bezel on the JLC was fixed.... It would have been much more appealing if you could use it as a GMT bezel. Short of that its a GREAT watch. Michael, your ROO is stunning! I am glad they do not fit me well as Id want a RG RC, A Bubble Bee, a Safari...

At 15k there are just so many possibilities...
Here are a few: GO PanomaticLunar, it comes in at about 50% of your budget, giving room for another watch if wanted Blancpain Flyback Chronograph Jaeger LeCoultre's new Master Chronograph (I'm not quite sure how much it is in gold, but it's 10k USD in SS) Then of course it's hard to go wrong with a Moser Or a Lange for that matter (1815) And Blancpain's Villeret collection is just beautiful, albeit hard to find good pictures of And Chopard has some beautiful offerings But of course if you're into something more unique, you could check out independants, there are quite a few that would fit quite comfortably in your price-range such as Sarapaneva, or a highly customized Habring. |
