I personally think it ruins the watch. Can't see Rolex offering it any time soon, its a passing fad, IMO

A search here will turn up a lot of threads on this subject. I like the look but not sure I'd do it to one of mine but if I did I'd go with a DLC coating it's more durable.

I agree.

I can't see it having much longevity either.

I think the Sub/Explorer/GMTII look stunning when blacked out, especially on a Nato. The contrast of the numbers and hands really pop.

BUT... with that being said, I'm not sure I'd ever be able to pull the trigger and do, not with my personal current financial state. If I had more money and a larger collection, then yes I'd do it for variety.

My understanding is that is was initially created to help protect the watch slightly more and take off any shiny metal bits that create attention.

I think it looks great on just the head of the watch when on a nato or strap. Just know that if it is scratched, the metal will show through and you cannot repair it without redoing the entire watch and it may still never look like it did when you first got it then.

There are people out that that love it, so I'm pretty sure you could sell it if you needed to. Look at projectx and that other british company. Ultimately, it is your watch to do with what you chose.

Not a fan. I think it kinda cheapens the whole look. Casio-esque.

It makes the watch look so cheap. I am not a fan at all and I doubt Rolex would even consider doing anything like this.

Is PVD different from DLC? Some of those Project X blackout watches look awesome.

It's like putting furry dice on a BMW M Series. I take it back..... it's worse you can always remove the furry dice.

From a maintenance perspective it doesn't make sense as once scratches it is like a diamond..... forever.

If you like the darker look, get a Panerai in titanium.

Not on a Rolex IMHO. If I really had money sticking out of my nose I would get a Pro Hunter just to see what the fuss is all about, but I would still love the classics a lot better.

PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) is the method used and DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) is the material.

PVD is a blanket term that now covers at least 4 different methods used. The most common being Magnetron Sputtering.

The coatings fall into 2 catagories: 1. Ceramic and 2. Low Friction
DLC would be considered low friction.

Keep in mind that the durability is directly connected to the thickness of the coating. Most decorative coatings could be as little as 0.3 microns which isn't gonna get you much of anything in the way of corrosion or scratch resistance.

This is just the new version of common electroplating. So, if you would electroplate your Rolex, then PVD may be for you.
Even in the best case scenario it is unlikely that DLCing any watch would add to it's value, and with a Rolex would most certainly subtract (significantly) from it's future resale.

I think it looks great, but I'd rather buy a watch that comes that way than have it done to one of mine.
