vintage rolex chronograph in eBay vs VRF

while enjoy my search and appreciating vintage rolex chronograph, I came across these 2 listings, one asking for $17,000 and the other was sold for $7990

congrats to the winner for a very good deal

interesting vintage market

Who would want to pay 17000 USD for a movement and case ? The rest is worthless and missing ?? I would not pay the 8000 USD unless I had the correct dial and case back for it .

I would like to know the chances of being able to find the correct caseback - let alone a original dial.
This has always puzzled me...... is refinishing of dials of this age acceptable in the collectable world?

Very slim to say the least . Most vintage watches have had their dial replaced or touched up during their lifetime .
That will reflect in their commercial value , the few that have their original untouched dial in good condition are the ones that fetch the big bucks with the top collectors .

The only ones I would ever buy-except not with dials in good condition-dials in amazing condition!!That is why there are very few people you can deal with in true vintage collecting. There are lots of old watches out there if you want to save money and there are few pristine trophy watches-untouched and original commanding much money!! More than anything in vintage--Buy the seller!!
