Daytona 16520 T series "Patrizzi" dial

A couple of weeks ago, at the IWJG show in Orlando, a well know TRF seller offered me this recently serviced Zenith Daytona.
The subdials are beginning to turn tan/light brown which is referred to by some Daytona collectors as a Patrizi dial.
The seller and I made a trade involving a Panerai 305 and cash from me and this Daytona has now become my new TRF avatar.

I recently bought a Panerai 029M GMT after looking for one for over 6 months.
It is my favorite of the 3 Panerais in my collection.

Yes-The Patrizzi dial was on Daytonas towards end of 1993 when Rolex changed from up-side down 6 to straight 6. It was due to a technical error that caused a color change in the paint.
PS--You mean polished center links--PCL's.

Nice Mark!!!

Side question - Is the story about folks blowing cigar smoke on a dial to turn the sub dials brown / call it a Patrizzi true? Still wonder if this is a wives tale or not.

I can't imagine that would work. It is not much different than in 1969 when Rolex black dials turned brown on Subs and Daytonas-"tropical" aka "chocolate". The sad thing is many people had them change dials out on services so they could have black--driving price and demand higher!!

I suspect more of a husbands (than a wives) tale.

No, unless the bracelet was changed at a later time.
I think only the A series Zenith Daytona was originally sold with a SEL bracelet.

Yes that was what I meant . I think the T reg 16520 didn't come with PLC 78390 's but that isn't really the issue ..
Patrizzi dial was something that Oswaldo marketed at the height of the Antiquorum when he still owned it and he also happened to own a couple of those Daytona's that had turned brown because of over exposure to UV light .
This may have been just a batch of UV unstable paint or maybe all 16520's of that period potentially had it . I guess only some had enough UV exposed to to turn brown or like probably all the ones that have come out of the woodwork since and have been simply bombarded with UV to accelerate the process.
I really doubt that Rolex ever knew about the problem till Oswaldo made it a rarity out of it .

Same difference ... Tropical dial ? Yes because of the " tropical " lens that created the same effect we all learned when we set fire to a leaf or dry wood with a loupe ( magnifying ) the extra heat created by these lenses burned the paint . Paints then were less UV stable , tropical domes in sunny countries just accelerated the process .

Try and find a patrizzi or tropical dial Rolex that spend all its life in the north of Sweden .

Love the look of the Zenith with black dial. I had an A series briefly, but I found it a bit too hard to read (and I have 20/20 vision).

Enjoy yours, Mark!
