My Grandfather's Watches
Hello All!
This weekend I asked my grandmother if she had any of my grandfather's watches. She said yes and showed me these two timepieces. The first is a 1970 Seiko Automatic 6139 8029 Chronograph. (Japan) The second is a Lanco 343 Automatic Swiss. I need help dating the Lanco. Probably a 50's-60's? I do not have possession of these watches. My father will hopefully get them. They both run perfectly, especially the Lanco. The Lanco would look better with a black leather strap.

Really nice watches Adam, especially the Lanco! Can't help you much, you would probably need to open the watch up to find the serial or something that would help you find out the date.

Yeah. My grandmother thought I wanted these, and my Dad kept saying "She's not going to give you these". She called me last night asking why I didn't take them! Now they're mine I guess.

Yeah for sure. Would anyone agree that the Lanco would look better with a black leather strap?

My Dad had a Lord Elgin with the same twist-o-flex band as your Lanco. I do not wear it much, but I did switch the band to a black leather. And, I had a service done on the Elgin, as I am sure my Dad never did. Enjoy your grandfather's timepieces.

Thank you very much. Yes, I think I most likely get a nice black leather strap on it. Also, do you think I should get it serviced?

You should probably have the Lanco serviced. I would totally keep the metal band on it, I think it looks great.

If you will be wearing the watches, it would be good to have a competent, local watchmaker give it a look-see, and "lube, oil change". My guy did say Dad's Elgin, and a couple of pocket watches were dry. I recall the service was ~120. for the Elgin, with no parts needed.

I don't know if I'll be wearing them a lot. $120 for a service? Wow. I don't think I have enough to service both. Could I do anything myself?

If you can't afford a service right now, then I would just store it in a safe place until you have enough. I would not attempt service myself (again), I have done it on an old Waltham pocket watch.

Yeah. Once I get them next time in Toronto, I'll just leave them until I find a job.
