I liked the 1680 until....
Good Evening.
I've been dreaming looking at the vintage Rolex 1680 Submariner. I love that red sub. It's very gorgeous. I was looking at one on eBay and I realized, woah. Look at the crystal! The crystal is way too thick. I think I'm going to go adore the 16610 now. Not saying that the 1680 is ugly or anything, it is truly beautiful. Can you have a thinner crystal on the 1680?

The original top hat is awesome!! Love it! Why would anyone want a 1680 with no top hat?? Try one you'll love it!!

I think that it takes a little while for the look to "grow" on you. Now, I LOVE it
Maybe a 1680 shouldn't be your first Rolex, but it should definitely be in a collection IMHO

It just looks too thick for me. My mind will most likely change when I see one in real life.

IMO that's one of the things that makes vintage watches special. Personally I like the acrylic crystal and the tophat on the 1680.

The Top Hat is one of the best looking crystals around and much better looking in person than in pics!!!
I bet your opinion would change within seconds of placing it on your wrist!

Very true. I will try to find one and try it on!!! There's this place in Toronto that have a bunch of used Rolex's, I've heard they have a couple 1680's. It's not an AD.

got to be honest and say i blow hot and cold with the top hat 127 .....
but when i do there is an alternative ...fit a tropic 19 ..superdomed, domed OR modern service crsytal from a 5513...gives a red a cool, slightly different look ...cant find a profile shot ..but you get the idea, this was just a service glass...looks even better witha superdome IMHO |

Thanks guys. Does anyone have a 1680 without a "top hat" crystal?

Jedly just posted one earlier in this thread. He just didn't post it with a profile shot. He put a tropic 19 on his red sub.

I'm wearing my first vintage Sub with a top hat 127 crystal and loving it! Steve Mulholland did some work on my watch before sending it to me and I had the option between the top hat and a non-cyclops super dome. It was a *very* hard choice for me to make. I spent hours looking through photos, many of them are accessible through the sticky post on this forum "Excellent Red Sub Post" or something like that. If you go there, you'll see many good photos of the Sub Date with different non-top hat crystals.
In the end, I decided I wanted the iconic look and I am not disappointed! One question for top hat veterans...should I be worried at all about beating up this crystal? I've never had one stand this proud and just a tiny bit worried I can easily bust it or cause it harm. I figure it is pretty safe considering the original purpose of the watch, LOL. |
