Best LED torch/flashlight

Hi guys. I'm in the market for a seriously high powered torch but it must be compact and easily carried. I've always used traditional Maglites but I'm aware of how much the tech has moved on and wondered if any of you guys had any recommendations. Whatever I buy has to be tough!
I'm just sick of the way my Maglite eats those D-cell betteries and I know I can get higher performance from a smaller torch.

Cool!(and I like your birthday G-shock too!). I might go for something a bit bigger but good to know they make good kit and they seem to have a pretty extensive range.

But it is small I got it so I could clip it in my pocket If I want to carry it around and still have both hands free until I need it.

Thanks guys. I don't mind sacrificing a little on size since I need something that can put a decent beam out to about 200m. Doesn't need to be pocket sized but easy to carry.

Out of interest how does lumens convert to good old candle power?

I'm a bit of a flashlight collector. I just bought this LED flashlight and like it a lot. Unlike many LED lights, this one operates on inexpensive alkaline batteries rather than lithium batteries. It is incredibly bright.

Divide the lumens by 0.07958. For example, 100 lumens / 0.07958 = 1257 candlepower

Maglite makes LED flashlights.
I like Maglites, I like the heft. Mine are old school.....3 of 'em....basic black....a 2D cell, a 3D cell & a mini (in the car glove-box) they still work well.

The Maglite 3D cell LED is pretty large, but supposedly has much longer battery life than the 2D or 4D cell LED flashlights. The illumination is about that of the 2D LED. I talked to someone (not at Maglite) who is fairly knowledgeable about batteries. Apparently Maglite engineered the 3D LED flashlight for exceptionally long battery life, while keeping the illumination down from where it could be if it had a shorter battery life.

That said, I prefer smaller lights. I find a 2AA cell LED flashlight is fine for my purposes.

I still have my four D-cell Brinkmann from my SWAT days. It's basically a club with a dim light on the end.

Bob -

I beleive you can. I also carry a 3D cell LED Mag (that is MUCH brighter than my 6D, and LIGHTER as well :) ).

However, MANY people swear by thier Surefire's. I've never used one, using the MagLite for 10+ years I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks :)

I've got a 3 D-cell at the moment. I'd like something a little smaller but same ballpark.
Do the Surefire's have a similar focusing arrangement to the maglites?

Do you mean when you turn the lamp housing with your hand to focus the beam, if so, then yes...

Maglite has a new LED model called the TL50 it's small and light and uses 3 AAA batteries. It has 104 Lumens and best of all the price is $29.99USD. Next I'm saving up for a Surefire!!!

You cant go wrong with a surefire. I have a E1B for carry and have seen the new nitecore (both d11 and E11) are great but sure they are version 2 due to parasitic drain on the versions 1. The difference is AA or Cr123 batteries. Some like AA since every hotel and remotes run AAs in case of emergency. Also keep in mind lithium has longer life and don't leak likes alkalines just food for thought.

Look at battery junction for a good selection.
