Milgauss....
A visionary's watch...?
I owned a GV and loved it. Then I experienced a cracked green crystal and lost faith and traded it. Are there any other long term owners who have used/worn their GV's in non-desk diver lifestyles without the issues of the cracking crystal? Now I miss the uniqueness about that special Rolex. The current model is a combination of everything Rolex and I yearn to bring it back to my wrist. What is holding me back (and what moved me to sell it) are the PCL's and the fragility of the green sapphire.. I feel that this is a tool watch and not a dress/attire timepiece. Should (could) Rolex have offered it with an Oyster bracelet as on their sports line? or is the flashy PLC bracelet the right match>? Am I alone in this conflict of thought? Is the MG GV a dress timepiece or a bulletproof wrist worn time indicator>? |

(btw I thought it was an oyster bracelet regardless of the pcl's -I thought oyster referred to the design of the links?) Last edited by Danand; 29 April 2011 at 01:55 PM.. Reason: Typo |

A good friend of mine has had his for 3 years now (GV), and treats it like a G-shock.
No problems at all with it other than it's covered in scratches....But has great character! If PCL's bother you, have them brushed out, but no need to worry about it's ability to handle a tough day!

I don't think Rolex makes "tool" watches any more. The more brittle the material (sapphire vs. acrylic; ceramic vs. aluminum), the more likely it is to fail completely, rather than just suffer some scratches or dings.

I have the non-GV so can't comment on the crystal. As far as the PCLs, I consider the Milgauss to be somewhat dressy so prefer them over brushed.

I have a colleague wearing a gv and he normally wears formal business attire. I don't really like working with him as i can't concentrate on work and find myself staring at his watch. A beautiful rolex but i'd also use it for more dressier occasions.

To answer the OP:
- Are you the only one to think that way about the PCL? No. (I love the bracelet the way it is though) - Is it a dress watch or bullet-proof grinder? I think it's both. It's a work in your lab-coat and drop various liquids on it, then dress up and go out, kind of watch. I think there's common sense to be applied, but otherwise, like sleddog wrote, it'll take a beating like the best of them. |

i have a small chip on the edge of my 16610LV crystal, so they are not exactly bulletproof imo. love the GV though. |

A small 3mm hairline (read see it with the naked eye) crack appeared almost dead center in the middle of the green crystal. I do not recall knocking it on anything. I took it to the AD who I purchased it from. He stated that Rolex would 'likely..' replace it under warranty...then he took it on trade on a brand new Explorer II (+ cash) - which I have worn daily for a year without issue. Thus I am afraid that I can not post any pictures....but I do find myself missing that watch.... |

My GV has been through the grinder.... Held up just fine. Quick polish of the 'shiny' parts and it looks awesome again.

It is calling you so you might as well buy it.
Your trusty AD probably would be willing to help you out with getting the PCLs brushed, No??? Afterall, the same AD got you that sweet clasp for your Explorer II.

I've never been a fan of the PCLs on the GV. Strangely enough though I love them on my 116710 (ducking the flames).

I had a GV then sold it but I kind of miss the Milgauss - I think I will try white dial Milgauss and brush eveything but bezel as others have. I liked the size of the watch.

I wear mine everywhere and play sports and go mountain biking and no problems. I wonder if you just had a one off issue with it. It's a great watch.

The GV is next on my list!! Cannot really explain how it suddenly leapfrogged some other contenders, but it has. I went to the AD to check out the new 39mm Explorer and my visit got highjacked by the GV sitting next to the Exp in the display. Awesome watch

Milgauss is not listed in the Rolex catalogue as belonging to the sport model. So I think it is more of a dress watch hence the PCL.
Initially I almost got a GV last week when it was offered to me by a friend. However I opted instead for the DJII slate with green Roman this week since I need a dress watch. |

I parted with my GV a couple months back and do not miss it.
BUT I will still say it is one of the most comfortable models out there on the wrist. I have seen a couple people who've had the case and bracelet brushed and I must say I REALLY LIKE IT! It really improves the watch in my opinion, the polished look just does not work for me on a tool watch but that is just me. Oh yes, I had no issues with the crystal and have 2 friends who own them (one has worn it daily since he got it when they first came out) and neither have had any complaints PS My favorite mod on one was the brushed case GV crystal and white dial..... It looked GREAT!

I quite like the Milgauss, just don't care for the contrasting color choices, orange and green aren't my favorites.

Though its history categorizes it as a tool watch (for engineers/scientists), the Milgauss is most definitely a dress watch. Today is the second day that I'm wearing my new GV, and I'm actually surprised by how dressy it looks. It has the smooth polished case, polished center links, and simple dial (no chrono, etc.)... definitely dressy. With summer hitting, it's almost TOO dressy! Very lovely specimen and will go well with a suit.

It's a 40mm watch, so yes it's quite a bit bigger than the explorer. It's a good diameter... actually it's also relatively thick and pretty weighty, due to the faraday cage around the movement. Some people, myself included, cite the weight as one reason to wear one... feels very substantial.

I reckon if Rolex didn't want it to be dressy they wouldn't have included a green crystal.
Of the three Milgauss, GV is the only one I like but its mainly due to the green crystal which is also one of the reason I did not get one as I find it quite arrogant of Rolex to have a high premium on the GV over the other two just because of a green crystal. Also I thought to myself if the green crystal is the only thing I like about the GV then I probably don't really like it that much compared to the other models I am full of contradiction |
