Datejust 31mm 178240 Roman numeral Vs Stick dial which is worth more?
Quick questions, Im getting my wife a rolex. We have come to the choice of the Datejust 31mm 178240 black SS. But we are undecided on which dial to go with, the roman numeral vs stick dial. Honestly we like both. We wanted a watched that kinda matched my SubC. Which dial will retain the most value in the long road? Also which dial from the datejust trends to stay more popular?

Both dial will retain value the same. If you want something that resembles your subc, then go with the stick dial. It would be cleaner and simpler as well. I always prefer clean dials and stay away from numbers and roman numerals.

Beautiful watches, both.
With the same bezel and bracelet, a regular dial Roman vs. stick should be equivalent in resale interest. Both sticks and Romans are popular. Also: The Roman dial that comes with a gold bezel (if you went with a two-tone or a fluted WG bezel) also has the Roman numerals in gold, creating a very nice effect. The stick version has lume, which is a nice feature that the Roman doesn't. And finally, the stick dial is easier to read (more legible) vs. the black with Roman in most light conditions. |

All good points made by everyone above.
I would normally lean towards sticks, but my god those Romans are beautiful. To me they are the perfect way to add some sparkle without adding diamonds. I think they are made of white gold. If lume is desireable then obviously the sticks, but realize it will not be very bright on this watch - it will be dimmer than most others. It will OK for transitioning through darker areas, but will not last long into the night. |

Its all about the LUME
I'm going to get myself a 31mm someday (like, as soon as a used one comes available that is in some color and bezel combination I like). So, I probably won't get much choice.
I think the romans are prettier BUT I'm mostly going to wear it for dress up, on a cruise, in a showroom, where I'm going to want to know the time when its DARK. I yearn for lume for that reason alone. Once I found out sticks were the only way for me to get lume, I found I wasn't so dead set on getting the roman. Then again, MOST of the time I cruise with hubby, and both his fancy watches have great lume, so I can just whip his wrist around in my direction and be all set! Suzy |

Thanks for your inputs. Both are beauties! Which is why it is a hard choice.

Just purchased my wife the 31mm 178240 datejust, domed bezel, with STICK dial! I think the look is more simple/cleaner than the roman numerals. Get which one she likes best would be my recommendation. Paul

I would get the Roman, without a doubt much classier IMHO... I never cared for the stick dials too much.
As for the resale value in my experience (my wife has had 2 Midsize) the midsize does not hold its value too well to begin with. One certainly will NOT hold better than the other, they will both drop quite dramatically as everything does when purchased new.

Agree: Love the Romans. Disagree: The 31mm is likelier a stronger resale these days since the demand is higher now (partly because of the beautiful new models). Agree: the two faces aren't really different for resale. I have a 31mm with Roman dial (white) and love it. |

I had some good logic going, just not correct, eh? (thinking of the bigger market recently for 31mm)
And yes, I knew that DJs as a whole don't have the resale of the sports watches. Not a problem for those of us who love the things. |

I think as a whole as long as you buy ANY Rolex to wear and enjoy and keep for several years you will get very close to what you paid for it... it just may take longer with some models IMO

Get the one your wife likes but, let me tell you, the 31mm with the white dial, Romans numbers and jubelee bracelet is a beauty.

As the former owner of a hard-to-read dial, I just want to point out that the sunburst dial with romans isn't easy to read. I've tried it on... there's just not enough contrast. I didn't think dial legibility mattered when I bought my lady DJ a few years ago (it had a concentric dial), because I loved the look overall, but after a while it was quite frustrating to have to turn my wrist this way and that and squint just to tell the time. Shoot, if you spend big bucks on a watch but have a hard time telling time with it, why have it?
