Exporting a shipment from the UK to CONUS
Guys need some wisdom.
I work for an IT firm who has a client with an office/site in Florida and several in the UK. They have aproached us to do some work in their Florida office. This will involve around £100k worth equipment (1 pallet) to be shipped from UK to Florida. My question is, are we liable for any hits or costs when the shipments lands in the States? We will pay the VAT in the UK and claim that back as the kit is going overseas. I am pretty sure there will be a charge to us when the kit lands in the States. I will be hitting the HMCE website but in the mean time any pointers will be appreciated.

Paul: surely you jest ! You do not have a shipping agent to get the package through US Customs? Let's hope for 'beginner's luck'! Yes, there are import duties, unless exempted under US law, and I'm sure you filled out a US customs declaration before shipping right??
Or, hopefully, you have not shipped yet, and can just hire a UK(or US) firm to act as your agent....they fill out the forms, and meet with US customs in NY or wherever, if there are problems. another way to do it, is to put yourself inside the bubble wrapping, and then you can hop out, and talk to US Customs yourself !(not suggested, will get kinda cold out over the atlantic)...... Best of Luck! |

Its a project I am tasked with to handle in Q2/Q3. I wanted to get some background before I start the ball rolling. Like the bubblewrap idea, reminds me of Erica Eliniak jumping out the cake in Under Siege.

As to the shipping I agree that an agent is the way to go. It may cost a few quid but worth it for the peace of mind.

To start with you don't ship a pallet but a 20' container.
If you'd like to know how to handle this the correct way you can PM me. |
