Sub date in window

There's been a lot of talk and interest about the end of the current tool/sports line of watches, and the eventual upgrade of the whole sports line to the new "bling" style.
Went shopping in Bury St Edmunds today, and there in the window of the local AD was a brand shiny new Sub Date. I've never seen one in the window of any AD before, so went in to try it on. The sales lady said that when it arrived she went through the waiting list as usual and no one wanted it, so they put it on general sale in the window.
Is this the start of a decline in popularity for the current Sub date ?
Or are people just waiting for the new updated version ????
