Icon5 Advice on which watch ...

Hi Trf-ers,

Its been a long time since my last post. I bought myself the non date sub a year ago, posted about that experience, went the nylon route (am back to the Rolex bracelet) and I'd estimate that my other watches have adorned my wrist maybe 20 days in the past year ... the Rolex is just too comfortable, looks great ... anyways.

I'm considered a bit of a watch geek (maybe one day I'd qualify as WIS) among friends and was requested to assist one of them (SR) in (I quote SR here) "buying a piece of art" for his wrist.

SR is a big guy, 6 foot something so I was thinking I'd suggest a large watch (but not necessarily so).

His budget (I dont know how flexible the budget is) is US$ 5,500/- approx.

My shortlist for him this far is:
  • The Rolex Sub - date or non date (used in the former and new in the latter)
  • The Deep Sea Sea Dweller - this is my 'grail' watch but is a lot more than his current budget allows - either new or used :-(
  • The Omega Planet Ocean 45mm (approx)
  • The Cartier Santos XL in steel (or perhaps smaller sized from the same family, depending on how he feels about the size)
  • Something by Panerai (I dont know these watches, the models, features, etc - but figure if so many of you love them, they must be good watches)

If you could suggest other watches he could look at, I know he'd much appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

Your list is fine, anyone of them is a piece of art. For the budget, you could also consider a Yachtmaster in Stainless Steel and Platinum...the dial and bezel are what I consider to be a work of art.

so, your friend just wants to blow $5 grand on some wrist art that he knows nothing about?

Get him a Rolex then...

Way to change the stereo types...

Perhaps try exposing/ educating him to the various watch brands as well as their history/ movements/series and let him decide.

After all it is going to be on his wrist and he needs to be happy with it. It may mean more to him if he made an educated choice....otherwise just tell him to get a watch that puts a smile on his face.

I'd go with a Sub. If this will be his only watch-- Rolex is the way to go. As for other choices, if he doesn't mind "lightly used", you might look at Girard Perregaux. The Seahawk or Laureato are great watches. The Seahawk is the diver and usually on a strap. Both are about 42mm.

Get a nice shiny new Planet Ocean, awesome watch, and, in my opinion, better than the previous generation of Subs

Thank you all for the input and ideas.

SR is educating himself - but as there are a zillion watches out there I'm giving him brands / models to focus his reading on. I've also suggested Breitling to him (not a personal fave of mine any more - silly story there)

Anything on your list is great...but I favor the Subby!

PAM is also a good choice and will also be in his range BNIB here on the Forum if he doesn't want a used watch....I would say the PAM0004 (Luminor Marina with steel caseback or PAM005 (which is, I think, the Luminor with skeleton case back).....had the 005 for a while but flipped it to buy a Daytona...of course!!

Either a sub date or non date doesnt matter, or a panerai..

Since your friend is a "Big Guy", have you considered a Breitling Navitimer? They range in the 42 - 43mm size. They have a great history and look nice.

Sounds like your friend is more interested in looks than function or history, so to me that says Panerai, not Rolex. Rolex IMO is the better watch, but the Sub is way less about art than function, and Panerai while being a still very good watch, is pretty artsy. A 44mm Pam Sub will grab someone's attention way faster than the comparatively pedestrian, low key Sub.

Tell him to get a G-shock, since he is not ready to decide; and let him decide for himself with out any persuasion. Your taste may differ from his, "to each his own".
