Trading Watch In At AD

I purchased a 16610LV new from an AD in February, well they just got a new ceramic LV in and called to see if I was interested. The new sub is incredible looking in person, and I want to trade the older LV. Should I expect to lose alot of money trading like this?

Thanks

Don't expect the best offer in the world - they will have to sell the watch at market value, so to make a profit, they will have to give you a lower offer than that. That profit margin would depend on the AD

Of course, you will lose money. It will be better if you sell it here on the forum.

See what they offer you. Remeber, the sales tax is calculated on the net amount, so figure in the tax savings into the deal.

Thank you all for the replies. I'm new to the watch world, so what would be considered a reasonable trade amount from the AD?

I would say about 4000-4500 depending on the condition. Don't be surprised if they hurt your feelings and offer you thousands less.

Your best bet is sell on this forum and buy on this forum. I'm sure by taking this route, you will save thousands... literally. I mean that.

Ouch! Maybe the for sale section here would be better, thanks.

Actually...you may not be able to sell as quickly or for as much as you like here. It helps to have some longevity and a rep first...but it can work!

Thanks for the help, it looks like some of the respected sellers here take modern rolex trades. Maybe I will be better off dealing with them!

My experience has been that the ADs always give the lowest trade in value.

As others have said, you will always LOSE when trading in at a dealer. Better to sell privately and then purchase the watch you want at the best price.

Good luck!

As an example on my newly RSC serviced 16710, the AD said they'd put it in their window and sell it on my behalf, and for that they'd take 20% of the sale price!! That plus the 40% (or whatever mark-up they have on a new Sub-C) = big profit for the AD.

Needless to say I'll be buying a 16610 from this forum!

Try to sell it yourself first. Just my opinion. Save some money maybe.

Neither of the two AD in my town will take in a trade or buy it outright. They claim to trade it in I need to be purchasing a watch twice the value of the trade in. So I wanted to trade my GMT c for a sub c plus cash would not be possible not even a trade for a daytona plus cash. This is just another reason why I avoid AD. The solution is to call up Davidsw here in the for sale section I sold him a sub a while back gave me more than a fair price and he had he money in my account as soon as I sent him the tracking number. I am sure a few other trusted sellers would also help out. Basically I gave up a few hundred that I could of made private to private but I took the risk out of getting scamed and with a $5k watch it was worth it.

When's the last time anybody cleaned up trading in their car at the dealership?

It's easier, safer but you're paying for that.

This may be a ridiculous question, but how do AD's re market watches that are pre owned? Aren't they only allowed to sell new watches? The two AD's in my area only have brand new watches... Are these two shops just missing an opportunity in not carrying pre owned?

I believe they can sell 'pre owned' as long as they are in a totally seperate display area.

I was told by the AD that they sell it under the rubric "estate jewelery." So in other words they can't advertise that they sell pre-owned Rolexes.

To be fair, the ADs need to make a crust to cover the lush carpets, nice display cabinets, etc. Just that smart shoppers will deal privately (or via one of the gray dealers)

I'd like to know the difference between the one purchased in Feb. to the new one?
What series is the old decrepit one?:-) Is it just the ceramic bezel? do you have any pics?

trade in experience

Well I'll share my recent trade in experience re 2 watches. I asked a US AD what I could get for a dj ii and wg daytona on strap #116519. My trade in would be $5000 & $12000 maybe in good condition. Definitely losses on both, but a great loss on the daytona. I declined and I will try to sell on my own. Just my experience...
