JLC Better Then Rolex?
Hi guys I was wondering if you can help me I saw a awesome watch in Iron Man 2 it was a JLC the watch costs $80,000. I looked at the Master Calender and I have seen lightly used for $5,000. Why is there such huge price differences? I see they take a big hit from new to used it seems more then Rolex does. They seem to make beautiful watches but what makes them so special? Are the higher cost ones hand made and the ones in the $10,000 range not? I know these are two different watches totally but they cost about the same is a Master Calander a better watch then a DSSD? Thank you for helping me.

As for resale, it depends on the model. JLC also makes all of their own movements, quite a few for other brands, and has developed over twice as many movements as the next closest manufacturer. The line-up is vast, going from watches in the $5000 range to very elaborate minute repeaters with over 20 complications costing well over $1M. Try some on and see what you think. Apples and oranges when it comes to comparing with Rolex. I couldn't begin to compare a Master Calendar with a DSSD, or use the word "better". It all depends on what appeals most to you.

Rolex bang for the buck in sport watch arena.
JLC bang for the buck in dress watches, even though some of their sport models like NSA compressor is VERY NICE! i am currently trying to source a Reverso Squadra which is a sport model. JLC is a great company with a rich history just like Rolex. JLC makes many movements and continues to push the design envelope. i like that a lot. JLC is a step up from Rolex in my mind. I can't play with Patek's pricing so JLC suites me just fine.

Totally different. JLC might be my favorite brand besides Rolex, but I've never even seen one besides pictures. The master Calender looks like a million bucks and is a bargain IMO at 5-7k pre owned.

Better than Rolex, yes and no. Technical wise, yes, definitely. Marketing wise, I don't think they're up to par to Rolex. Not even close.

What Jaeger does that very few other manufactures also offer is that every watch gets the same quality attention no matter what price range it's in. A $10,000 Master Calendar has gone through the same process as the 100K+ watches. And the standard is to the 100K+ watch.
Definitely a cut above Rolex. |

i cant compare the 2. they look totally different.
design wise jlc can look eccentric to weird. blame the designers. for conventional people it may look ugly compared to a rolex movement wise jlc would win. they have stricter standards and use more advanced materials. they just dont advertise how great their watches are technically. im planning to get a mcc2 or a zenith striking 10th. just waiting for my opportunity. im not looking to get another rolex. |

JLC is incomparable to almost any other brand in that its high quality, movement prowess and designs are top notch while price is more affordable on basic models...we are lucky to be in an age where JLC calendars can be bought for 5K...its called the watchmaker's watch for very good reasons...its literally horological sacrilege, humbly I say so, to compare a Rolex to JLC.

Completely different niches in horology, incomparable watches and brands.
I agree that JLC watches are "better" watches, in terms of complications and horological marvels, but quality of both manufacturers are basically on the same level. And Rolex watches are tough as nails, ready to take hits and blows and still serve you a lifetime. If I were to choose between which of these two brands I admire the most, it will be a tough choice, but I`ll be opted for JLC. And all the admiration aside, I think that Rolex watch (tool watches in particular) are much closer to my lifestyle than JLC, so I would rather wear Rolex than any JLC, but that`s just personal taste.

regarding jlc sports watch vs rolex sports watch
jlc still wins but rolex is right up there. check out master compressor line. rolex just has and edge because they are the masters of the steel bracelet. as for design its just a personal preference. |

Completely take the points of those who have alluded to Rolex 'doing' sports/tool watches better - I have owned a DSSD and absolutely loved it on the wrist and hugely respected the technical innovation that went into manufacturing it (case and bracelet) - however being a man who's about to pick up his new JLC Master Compressor Extreme World Chronograph tomorrow, I do believe that the options/complications available to a JLC customer even on Rolex's home turf (my new watch being an example) are far more varied than Rolex offers.
Like others here, a sports watch goes with my quotidian lifestyle more appropriately, however that's not to say that my daily routine won't be enhanced by the complications offered by JLC, particularly in its Master Compressor and AMVOX lines. I can't wait to be able to swap out my JLC's leather band for a rubber one in seconds and sweat to my heart's content, or give it a run-about and not worry about damaging the movement from any potential shocks, and most importantly be able to know the time anywhere in the world at a single glance. For this reason, I've gone for JLC this time around... |

Is a Jaguar XK a "better" car than a Range Rover...?
Most would agree that the JLC is the "better" watch in terms of movement. If you need a highend tool watch Rolex would be "better". For me and my lifestyle the Rolex and the Range Rover would be better suited. If you live and work in town both would be fine choices but with the edge going to the Jag and the JLC. Since most people take very good care of their watches, and since I suspect you don't actually NEED an HE valve in the course of your daily life, just buy the one you like most!

How about reliability? In general, would one be more reliable than the other?
The reliability of Rolex's movement are proven. How about JLC's? |

I think quite highly of JLC, needless to say they have a strong pedigree, have developed icon designs like the Reverso, and have a smart marketing department that takes care of cultivating the brand, releasing limited editions of older designs etc. And some of their movements are far more advanced and elegant that Rolex.
Having said that, the whole 1000 hrs of testing is complete bullcr-p! I've bought two JLC's during the last 12 months. The first one was a JLC Navy Seals Alarm, which had a date wheel that didn't connect properly and was exchanged for a new copy by the AD right away. Strike 1. Later in the year I bought a Master Chrono (boutique edition nonetheless) and the whole dial/movement moved when you tried to push in the crown (!?). Back to the JLC Boutique in Bev Hills, on to service and it was eventually fixed. Strike two. Perhaps my 3rd JLC will actually worked as advertised straight out of box... Lastly, another matter to consider when purchasing a JLC is the value retention. JLCs don't tend to keep their value particularly well used. Net/net: neither is better or worse. It all depends on what you are looking for and what perspective you have. |
