I ran into this fellow this morning...
I was hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains and heard a tree limb snap to my right and didn't think too much of it. I was looking for fawns and was preoccupied with that and so I moved on after a bit and as I came over the ridge I came face to face with this black bear. He was foraging for food and may have been looking for the same fawns I was but he didn't like the look of me so we parted ways.

Wow! What great shots! You should of held out your Rolex in front of the lens, to get the bear in off focus behind!

From the shots it seems the bear was only approx 10 meters away or so. Hope you had enough protection Mike.
Great shots too. It's very difficult to show dark objects with textures. |

Cool photos. But wonder why the bear's mouth foamy? Seems to increase as the photos progress. Is it a stress response to seeing you?

Thank you all for the kind comments everyone. I've been around many wild animals that are potentially dangerous in my life and I know my boundaries and never push my luck.
Lisa, foaming at the mouth can be an indication of stress for these bears but this bear seemed to be at ease with my presence while it was in the brush and it just ambled along at a leisurely pace until it came to a bit of clearing. I think it felt a little vulnerable at that point and trotted into the field until it had about 20-30 yards between us and then felt more at ease and again resumed its normal pace.
