Red sub: Submariner writing is in red vs. white
Nipple dial: Hour markers are in gold vs lume and look little nipples. If you stick around it will all come to you over time! Welcome to TRF and welcome to the vintage world!!

The red sub is referring to the "Submariner" text on the dial...(In red)
The nipple dial refers to the unique shape of the hour markers on some of the vintage models.... Try using the search button near the top of the main page.....You be surprised what you could find on your own!

In fact if you go down to RacerX thread titled 1680's strapped you will see great example of both Red Sub and a Gold Sub with nipple dial.

This pic shows the "nipples" of the nipple dial. You can see that the hour markers (in gold) are raised and slightly pointed.
