Looking to buy my first Rolex-- Need advice

I just graduated from grad school and want to buy myself my first Rolex. I am in my mid 20s and would like to use whatever watch I buy as an everyday watch.

I am thinking about getting a used Submariner. I want to pay under $4,000. Do you guys think I can get a good one at this price? What are the most important things to watch out for when buying used (except for authenticity)? Since I don't want to spend over $4,000, should I just go for a DJ instead?

Congrats and welcome! Either a 14060M (no-date) or 16610 (date) Sub would be a great choice and could be acquired within your budget. Look on the sales form here for options. Ideally, you would want one with box and papers, and something that has been recently serviced. At <$4k though you might not get all of those though, so the best advice is to buy the seller, then buy the watch.

Congrats, You can't go wrong with a Submariner. I own one and love it however you should buy a watch that your budget can afford. With any type of Rolex, you can always upgrade later when finances get better.

Congrats on your graduate degree! I got my ND Sub 50 years ago, and I wore it today. I probably had it on when I got my MS.

Yes, congratulations. Now how about a sweet older GMT II. My first and it's been through so much and it's a trooper.

I think im going to go with a DJ for now and save a little more money and hopefully trade in the DJ and get a better Sub later than one I can afford now.

Secondly, I do not know nearly as much about Rolex as you great people so I would like to hear what you guys think about this one...

Thank you guys for all the advice!

I want to get a sub but I think I'll get a DJ for now and save up some more money and hopefully trade in the DJ and get a nicer sub later than I can afford night now.

There is a nice Y-series DJ (rhodium roman numeral dial) with box, papers, and tag that I really like on TZ for $2800. Since you guys know a lot more than I do, does that generally sound like a good deal?

If you want a Sub do not settle for a DJ. You will regret it and be dissappointed.

Just my opinion.

I wanted/needed a Sub since I was 13. Finally got it at 48!

Wait for what you want - it is worth it.

Congrats sir! My first Rolex was a 16800 Submariner. I absolutely LOVED it, and it was close to production in my birth-year. However, I jumped at the chanced to "upgrade" into a modern Sea-Dweller.

Go with a Submariner. You will be addicted to Rolex going forward. ;)
