Buying Out of State?

I am in the market for a new watch, most likely a GMT IIC. My experience thus far has indicated little to no discount from local AD's in my area. If you add in the 8% sales tax I have to pay for the privilege of living in NY, I am looking at about $8,500 out the door.
I know I could buy off this site and save some $, but I was thinking of another alternative. New Hampshire does not have a sales tax. They also have two AD's. I'm thinking of making a long weekend out of it and driving up there to save the tax. If I can negotiate a discount on top of the tax savings I'm that much further ahead.
I realize that there are some very real costs associated with this strategy (gas, food for two, hotel...), but I figure the tax will take care of most of the additional costs. On top of a new watch my wife and I will get a nice weekend, basically for free.

Thoughts?

If the tax savings and potential discount add up to less than what your trip would cost I would say do it.

You don't have to go to NH. You could buy the watch in CT or NJ and provided the store doesn't have a location in NYS, you could have the watch shipped to you. Then you wouldn't have to pay any taxes... No need for a road trip when a 30min metro north ride would suffice.

True in Canada...not so true in the US (about the discounts)

It sure seems like discounts are worse than ever. Places that used to discount SS sports aren't anymore. Appears that Rolex is tightening its iron grip.

If you just dont want to buy from a forum seller, find an out of state AD that'll ship to you, and you might even find one who'll discount 5-10%.

Agreed with gqllc with regards to the discounts in the US.

I got a really great deal on my Submariner when I bought it back in 2001 (so much so that I made profit on it when I recently sold it), but when I looked around at a number of AD for my Sub-C I couldn't find anyone willing to discount off of MSRP.

Now that I'm in the market myself for a Milgauss, I've been also curious if anyone in the New England area even does discounting anymore (I guess the best you can hope for is tax-free NH or out of state shipping to save on tax.)

I like ADs but there are very good sellers here.

Can trusted sellers here get your name on a valid 2 year warrantee card? If so even better.

Get a GMT IIc from DavidSW, and save $2,000. Put that 2 grand towards another Rolex or towards a nice trip

Buy With Confidence. There is no reason to waste your money at an AD. MANY of the long-time members have bought multiple watches from David

The AD in Portsmouth (NH) is TINY, so you'd better call to see they have what you want. It's nothing like the NY stores where it's an orgy of a selection.

It's little known that many states have laws requiring you to declare tax free purchases and pay your state's sales tax. I'm sure there's complete compliance(wink, wink, non, nod).

Another point is do you really need to buy from an AD?
I have down so in the past but not likely to do so again.
As I stated before it does sound like a fun trip & the whole deal maybe part of the fun.

I saved around $1k from taxes alone when I bought my Daytona from an AD in Oregon on a recent trip. It was pure luck that they had it and instant gratification at the same time. I didn't have to wait for availability.

Now in your case the GMT IIC is more readily available. If I were you I would check with reputable sellers here first. If none of them have it then I'd make a short trip to AD's in neighboring states and have them ship the watch back to NY to at least save on sales tax.

I live just north of Portsmouth and was in Springer's 2 days ago. They have a GMTIIc for $7900.00... but they rarely give any discounts...

I would say do it. You and your wife will enjoy the weekend and you will have your GMT IIc too, so why not.

My only "problem" with having it shipped to me (to save the sales tax) is that I lose the instant gratification of walking out with the watch on my wrist. The question then becomes what is that gratification worth? It's worth something, but not $2,000!

I should mention that I live in Upstate NY. NH is not that far of a drive. I've got a nice car that I enjoy driving and a wife I enjoy traveling with. A weekend at the Massachusets shore, perhaps Cape Ann, to go with a new watch is very appealing. My only other problem is going into a jewelry store, with my wife, to shop for me. There is always the potential that this could get more costly than expected.

I did the same thing when I bought my GMT. Bought it in NJ had it shipped to my father's house in NY. Saved the tax, and got a nice discount to boot! Def the way to go. NY (and NJ for that matter) picks our pockets enough as it is!

Forgot to add Portsmouth is a VERY nice sea-side down with many shops and restaurants... even if you don't go to get your watch there, it is an excellent place in the summer to spend some QT with the wife

I would call ahead of time, just to make sure they have what you are looking for. Hate to see you go all that way and find out they didn't have one for some reason.

I would definitely just get one from a trusted seller on this forum. I know a
seller right now who has a BNIB GMTiic which is priced about $1600 lower than what you'd be paying with tax in NJ. So, even if you do drive to New Hampshire, yes you'll have a free weekend getaway with the saved tax, but there's a strong risk the dealer will not knock an additional $1000 off that watch, and most don't talk price over the phone.
PM me if you're interested in buying it off a seller on this forum.

When buying from a non AD, do you get the Rolex factory 2 year warrantee?

Does anyone know?

If so, that is pretty sweet at the reduced price.

Dude. No question. Buy from a good guy here on TRF, save a ton of money on a great watch, go get your wife a nice handbag(if she's into that), take a nice trip, and then take a picture of the grin on your face while wearing your new Rolex.

No other alternative my friend.
