Question from Newbie on Deepsea model
Hi Guys,
I'm dying to buy myself a Rolex Deepsea 116660 for my 40th birthday! I look at many pictures of the model 116660 and I have a question I'm pretty sure the group will have an answer. Here goes.... I f you look on the side of the watch by the Helium valve some deepsea 116660 have a barecode and some don't. Why is that???? Looking forward to reading you guys! Cheers Eric |

It's just a sticker on all the random ID # models. There is no such thing as a random serial #. Serial #s are sequential.

It's just a sticker on the case when you buy it brand new.
Yes, there is such thing as random serial #s. The latest Rolex comes out with random serial numbers now.

It's a semantics issue. "Serial" number by definition are in a series...or in order. So random serial numbers kind of don't make sense. That's why he's calling the random "ID" numbers.

Serials case letters Humbug to them all, after contacting Rolex to get
rid of the holograms and they obliged. And then asking them to end this serial case stuff what did they do, start this bloody random system. And now thanks to Rolex and a mistake on my part for asking Rolex, we will have hundreds of random serial questions on TRF.

Eric, have you tried on a DeepSea? Please do before you buy one. It's a very tall, chunky watch to wear, some like it, some don't, it would, here's where I use a word I always made fun of my mother for using, it would behoove you to make sure you're ok with the height. Wouldn't hurt to try on a Sub C at the same time to compare the 2. Either way, quite a nice 40th bday gift. :)

You can't wear a buttoned dress shirt over the Deep Sea. You can wear a dress shirt over the old Sea Dweller. You can get the oldie pretty cheap nowadays. Here's my A-series "Swiss" luminova model from 1998/1999. If you want a larger, blingy dive watch - go for the larger blingy dive watch. Other companies make those, and they are indeed eye catching. They're also high visibility and have use under water. I wear my SD under water, and its fine, but I prefer a more functional watch for anything other than casual diving. I feel I can wear the old beater watch just about anywhere, including the beach and snorkeling around reefs. I'm not sure I'd wear the $10K watch doing the same.
Isn't the new DS about the same price as the new Daytona? Hmmm. |

Congrats on your decision to get a Deepsea. You will absolutely love this watch and do not let any of these sour grapes that have the older version model sea dweller try to change your mind.
I think the DSSD is the best looking Rolex out today and btw, you will be able to wear it with button down shirts. |
