Panerai and water activities?
How is panerai in the water? Diving? Swimming? Is the leather strap recommended for water? What about the screw in lug things? Are they tight enough, im confident enough to go. Jet skiing with my gmt, what about the Pam?
Anything you post would be grateful thank you

from Panerai themselves Water-resistant test This test investigates the water absorption and water rejection characteristics: the leather strap is alternately submerged in water and air-dried. Salt water test The straps are tested in a liquid whose constitution is identical to that of seawater. One day of testing corresponds approximately to 3 weeks of bathing in the sea. The strength of the bonding, discoloration and shrinkage of the straps as well as the corrosion resistance of the buckles are tested. Humidity test This test simulates the combination of high atmospheric humidity with high temperature. UV radiation The straps are submitted to 72 hours of UV radiation reproduced in the laboratory simulating 6 days of sunlight at the hottest times of day in summer. The bracelets are also exposed to artificial light to simulate a presentation in shopping windows. Perspiration The straps are immersed in a chemical solution similar to perspiration for a period of seven days. Traction and torsion The traction test is carried out by exerting an increasing amount of tension on straps until they break. The torsion test consists of submitting the straps to twisting forces so as to test the consistency/flexibility ratio. Abrasion The abrasion test demonstrates the colour wear characteristics of the leather. Pull-through test The pull-through corresponds to the action of putting the bracelet around the wrist. Leather and buckle are tested in combination. Rubber, Velcro® and Coramid® Straps For diving or other sports activities, rubber, Velcro® and Coramid® straps that are completely water-resistant are available. that being said I would think they would not be suitable for diving and still look as good as they do,the JV is well know to show water marks very easily,if you prefer your straps to look vintage and beaten up,then Panerai seem to be saying they will hold up to getting wet. |

You Pam has a higher rating than your GMT II. I would throw on the OEM rubber and wear it in the water all summer.
Pams are made for water, your GMT was not, although it is rated for 300ft. I used to swim with my old GMT II's all the time, but I feel way better when I have a Panerai on my wrist with the OEM rubber for water activities. I have a original Kodiak strap in the mail and I plan on using that for the pool/beach. I love the OEM rubber but they are a tad small for my wrist. Mario Paci makes the best straps for Panerai IMHO, and he has a full line of waterproof straps that look and wear fantstic.

I use my Panerai's all the time for swimming, diving, jet skiing and on the beach. My Luminors are always on rubber but as my 232 didn't have a rubber strap I used to use a Toshi strap and it has given it a beautiful aged look. Never had any issues! As said septh rating on a luminor is more than a GMT!!

I would also probably put the rubber strap on first.

Not sure if he is a member here, but there is a gentleman on the forums who is a professional diver (now retired) that used his OEM gator strap as a tool for six years.

If it was in the open position and the case in not really submerged in water but held under the sink in running water, would water enter the case? I know when you push it in, that is supposed to water seal the case. I know the Rolex watches with twin or triple lock won't allow running water inside the case. I'm wondering if this is the same as the Rolex. Anyone?

I used to wear my 104 in the gym shower and pool with the OEM black calf strap... no problems as far as I could tell.

Of course not.
All I'm saying is that it can be worn all the time, on the OEM calf strap.

I always thought the guard was to stop the crown from being left in the out position or from being opened by accident under water rather than it being there to put pressure on the crown to seal it?

You know... I posted a video I found on YouTube on this forum about Panerai Watches and I should've paid closer attention because... Snog was correct.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNcf5o9N3WA Look carefully where they conduct water resistance test with the crown lever in the open position. |

All I was saying is most, MOST people wouldn't swim with their PAMs much less with the crown lever open.

I am headed to Las Vegas and I am planning to wear the PAM 111 with the rubber strap into the pool.
