Worried about buying from trusted seller in USA

I am considering buying a new Rolex from DavidSW in the USA. I am in the UK and concerned about import tax and VAT issues.

I have asked him about any taxes due etc and he advised me that he pays all insurances and taxes and that the max I would be liable for is $25.

I am concerned as I have read a recent thread by Joe on this forum in July which suggests VAT at 20% is payable plus import tax.

Has anyone in the UK bought from DavidSW or USA? I love the watch but don't want to get stung by extra costs when it gets here.

Your comments would be very much appreciated.

Yes many times. Goods arrive at my desk at work with no issues whatsoever. I'll buy from davidsw or Tony, justrolexes, any time

Thomas, that sounds great, but for example in Finland, ALL packages from outside EU are scanned. If not declared properly, customs open the package... Just as a heads up.

I don't know about UK customs behaviors, but worst case scenario you'll end up paying VAT + import fee.

I personally spoke to fedex about this a few weeks ago and they said due to the volumes coming in from the US to Stansted, they only open packages if he airbill is completely wrong or if the scanner shows there's a gun inside the package

I've bought from the US for years and the most ive ever paid is 15 quid in fedex "handling fees"

I'll buy from davidsw, justrolexes, Moscow etc any day over a UK AD!!!

You have to pay around 25% on top of the cost of the watch . If its not declared at true value , you MAY get away with it at little or no cost. If its found to be under declared as regards value, the best senario will be, you have to pay around 25% of the true cost. The WORST senario is that the watch will be confiscated and you will have lost your watch. I should check further if I were you as you are not been given correct advice. If you could just get expensive watches from USA without an extra 25% or so there would be hundreds of UK dealers buying from the USA, as often in auctions over there are many bargains when compared to UK prices. Things are simply NOT that easy, unless you are VERY lucky. ! Just google " Duty Calculator " for exact amount you would have to pay

Here is a simple duty calculator

http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-im...x-calculation/

Hope it helps.

I have bought guitar pedals from US and have been stung by the courier on the doorstep requesting 30 quid for customs and VAT costs.

Be careful - it's not as easy as it seems. There is a chance that you don't pay anything or there is a chance that you get stung for duty if your parcel gets picked up by customs. I recently purchased from David and had the watch delivered to a friend in the States who bought it over to the EU. Caveat Emptor

Hello my friend
Deal with total confidence with David and when he tells you that he will cover the fees and your share will be only about $25 that should be all the info you need.
100s of guys have done it before you and I am sure 100z will do it after you.
Therefore no need to worry

All very coy this post. So, reading between the lines the vendor fails to declare the true value of the package there by avoiding the full VAT and duty due on the item?

As the OP seems to be aware VAT and possibly duty are due on the purchase.

I too have dealt with David and if he tells you that he will take care of it, he will. I would have no concern whatsoever!

DavidSW is probably one of the people who you don't have to think twice about buying from. Check out all his feedback and postings to see that he is verified.

Weird thread turn. Just ask him what he does, declares, etc. It's not a state secret. If you don't like what he says, call someone else, or the AD.

Straight up you would be a fool if you didnt buy from DavidSW. Dont mean to be harsh, but I would personally guarantee an honest transaction.

Thanks for all the feedback. Sounds like there is no doubt about David's integrity. However there is mixed opinion on whether there is a risk that customs might find out and I am faced with a big bill. 20% is a huge expense that I am sure David would not cover. I am not sure now I want to take the risk.

I will say this in the most direct way possible. If David tells you the tax is 20 pounds, then it will be 20 pounds, regardless of what anyone else says.

No mixed opinions. You get found out you are liable for VAT/associated duty. What the likelihood of HM Customs and Excise finding out the true value of the goods is anybody's guess.
