First rolex
Hello,
I visit this forum every day as I save for my first Rolex. I'm a classic kinda guy. As such, I was convinced a no-date sub was the perfect timepiece for me. However, I'm starting to really enjoy the look and versatility of the Explorer too. Did anyone else contemplate the two before making the jump? I'm a shirt-and-tie guy by day and think the Exporer may look a little better. I've seen it on leather too; it looked great. Perhaps some day I will be able to have both. For now, I'm enjoying the research and information on this site. The search is half the fun. K |

I like the explorer, but I am definitely a Sub kinda guy. Get a 14060M (or better yet, a 5513)

Honestly, you will get lots of supporters on both watch... although I want to guess that a little more people here will be in favor of the Sub no date. I think it will just come down to if you need the date and GMT function. My vote definitely goes to the Exp2 black dial, which I think is one of the most stealth but functional watch that Rolex has to offer. Either watch will be a great addition, and I suspect that you will end up with both in the future. Good luck to you!

Well, I prefer the sub, but you seem to be leaning towards the Explorer. You should get what you naturally gravitate to. The Explorer is a nice watch.

Assuming you reference Explorer I 39mm, go for it. No regrets.
Have enjoyed the elegance of this watch. But try them on; to each their own. Check profile/weight of watch on wrist as a daily wearer. I have heard the dial of the no-date Sub doesn't "pop" to same degree as the Sub-Date; or new Explorer I with matte black dial. Should be a pretty obvious choice to you once you spend time with the watches.

I think any Rolex is a perfect first Rolex. It's very hard to make a bad choice, in fact I think that might be darn near impossible.
Determine which makes you the happiest when you put it on, and get that one.

I chose an Expy II Noir as my first, and still love it. When my sister-in-law commented on how nice it looked at the pool the other day, I told her it was a Rolex on a $20 nylon NATO strap, and she laughed and got a kick out of it. If I had it to do over, I'd probably choose a polar version, not because I'm prejudiced, but because there are so many blackface (and I mean that term totally innocently) watches out there that can be added to your collection in the future.
First watch, go for a Polar Expy II, IMO, a great choice, and one I'd make if I had it to do over. Do NOT overpay for it, though. Unless you're looking at a 70's era (grail, and only available in black AFAIK) McQueen or the new (not yet available) version, these watches are easy to pick up for a fairly modest amount. There is love for them, but not so much that you should pay a king's ransom. Because price discussions are a bit vorbotten in these parts, feel free to PM me for some (biased) opinions on what you should be looking to pay. If it's the regular Expy I you're thinking about, I can't personally say I own one, but I especially like the ones with the 3/6/9 markings -- and some of them come in very cool variations these days. I still prefer the 24-hr. hand myself, because who knows when you're going to be lost in the Northern Hemisphere and need a makeshift compass. Gotta always be ready for ZA day, right? LOL, righteo, 'nuff said. |

Sub man through and through, got to have the date though. I love the look of the no date, very James Bond! Explorer a great watch too, in the end you will need to make the choice for yourself on what suits your lifestyle best. Plus if you hang round here long enough whatever you buy will be the first of a "collection"! Cheers

The new Explorer II is on my wish list. I think the new ones will satisfy a lot of people with the changes. That said, my first Rolex was a no-date Submariner and I'll never let go of that one. You can't go wrong either way though. Both are excellent sport watches. If you are a fidgety bezel twister you may want the Sub over the Explorer though. Good luck and have fun choosing!

I made a horrible deal to get my ND Sub - gave away a much more expensive watch to get it. Nonetheless, I consider it the best deal I ever made, because of all my watches the Sub ND is the most comfortable, most versatile, and best looking of all the tool watches I own. So you know my vote.

I say get whatever sings to you. Who cares what anyone else thinks/says. It's your watch and you wear it.
