need advice about my daytona please
I recently bought a ss rolex zenith daytona for £7000. It was a dream watch and i had to save hard to buy it.
The watch was sold as a 1993 model, but i did some research and found that it could not be a 1993 model as it has a luminova dial ie no letter t before and after the word swiss made. This means the dial is a 99/2000 model. I am worried now that the watch is either fake or cobbled together although i did buy it from a reputable jeweller. This raises a few questions, how much is it to have rolex authenticate it and does it have to be sent to switzerland to do this. Will rolex confirm year etc if real. how much will it affect value of watch if it is proper movement inside ie not a fake but it has had a dial change. whats best site to date watch from its serial number. Thanx in anticipation of help, |

Hello & welcome! The dial may have been swapped during a service, which is unfortunate as that will affect the overall value of the watch to most collectors. Were the hands changed too? You should be able to find a dial correct for the watch, although it will not be cheap. Sellers will often list & sell watches as 100% authentic & original because the watch contains original Rolex parts, even though they may not be original to "that" particular watch. I am not sure what recourse you have with the seller, but I am sure that they knew what they were selling. As far as a resource, you can go to the Rolex Reference Page on this site and there is a lot of info there. You can also use www.oysterworld.de

Possibly this Zenith Daytona has seen a dial change
and usually the new dial will be Luminova, it makes a difference to the purists and the price is a bit lower I think you should have paid 6500 pounds with box and papers. I would also look at the reference if it indeed it says 16520 or worst 16523 Back then many bought the steel bracelet, steel bezel and luminova dial with hands and "created" an authentic steel Zenith Rolex on the cheap as the Two tone reference 16523 does not share the glamour... of a 16520 Zenith. |

Are you able to pull a serial number located between the lugs? Based on your description, if it does not have a inverted "6", it sounds like a S,W, T, U series with a replaced dial. Another clue is to find the laser etched crown and see if there is an "S" in the middle which indicates that its a service replace crystal.
You may still have a authenic Rolex watch, just some parts were replaced by Rolex. Since you have doubts, you should get it checked out by an AD. All Rolex Authorized Dealers have a Rolex trained watchmaker on site. Do it soon since you still have recourse with the jeweler. If it all checks out, they you have the watch that you want. Unfortunately, the dial replacement is a major no-no for collectors only. If I were you, based on the price you paid, I would see if I can get my money back. This 16520 series is pretty common if not the most common and I've seen asking for slightly north of $9,000 all original. We all work so hard for our money. Next time, if possible, do the research BEFORE purchasing. |
