Fake Red 1680 in the UK

Hey all,

Just handled a fake red 1680 Sub Date - quite convincing at a glance, but definitely wrong on its details. Bracelet was marked 78360, date wheel was a silvery colour, fonts seemed slightly off too. The time adjustment went the wrong way, and the bezel moved far too freely. They had even attempted to imitate patina on the dial, although it was far too uniform and perfect for it to be convincing.

Just a heads up, folks!

Chris

Blimey, was the owner with you at the time? Were they aware on their fake Rollie or unsuspecting?
I want a 1680 Red at somepoint on a 1972 serial number for the year of my arrival in the world, I will be pestering the guys in the vintage section to bump up my limited knowledge before I do anything.

Hi Paul,

It was, apparently, a chap looking to buy it from someone else - the asking price was £2000, and the seller had let him take it to be authenticated. That's what he said, anyway, the story sounds a bit fishy to me! In any case, I hope I've prevented someone's fingers getting burnt.
